NO 3g or 4g on trains

Noticing on my regular train journeys from london to manchester that my iPhone 6 never offers me 3g or 4g,

just plusnet   or Virgins own slow wifi.  Any suggestions please?

Is there any particular areas you notice the signal disappear or not work in? I ask as you can check here: https://www.plus.net/mobile/coverage-checker/ to make sure you can get services in these areas.
