Mobile Phones You can watch or read in sunlight

Has anyone yet produced a phone you can see or read when there is direct sunlight shining on it.  If not I presume the first company to do so will make a fortune selling them

Re: Mobile Phones You can watch or read in sunlight

Most smart phones let you adjust the brightness. If you're viewing the phone in the daytime with sunshine, turn the brightness up to see the screen more clearly. A lot of modern smart phones will do this automatically by using the front camera to detect how much brightness is needed to view the screen.

Re: Mobile Phones You can watch or read in sunlight

It's a pity no phone manufacturer hasn't come up with something suitable. Using something similar to nintendo's reflective colour display used on some of their hand helds. Where bright external light illuminates the display and the backlight is just used in dark conditions.

Phones are pretty hopeless in sunshine. Yes you can turn up the lcd brightness to full, which helps on some, and then watch the battery level go down.

Not adding much of worth to the conversation, but OLED screens (used by a lot of high end smartphones) don't have backlights.

Re: Mobile Phones You can watch or read in sunlight

True enough but turning the brightness up on them just makes screen burn more likely.

On a really sunny day I guess I could just dig out my old Nokia 3310.

No trouble seeing the display on that on a sunny day. Not that there's a lot to see on it.
