Virus footer suggestions please...

Morning all,
I'd like to ask people for their thoughts/suggestions on something.
As part of the ongoing email platform consolidation work that we've been doing we now have a common anti-virus platform for *all* of our various brands (Madasafish etc. included). Unfortunately the way the system is configured means that we can't have specific email footers for each brand.
I've recently raised a problem because Madasafish customers are getting the Plusnet virus footer. I've been doing some testing around this and would like some confirmation on a few things.
Firstly, do any of you get this footer on your incoming emails? If so what brand are you with (i.e. Plusnet/Force9) and do you have anti-virus enabled in the spam tab of your Manage My Mail settings in the Member Centre? I've tried 3 of my accounts, all with anti-virus enabled, and I'm not getting the footer on any of them! With some of my other accounts it seems to be intermittent,

Virus Protection and more available at http://www.plus.net

Secondly, we don't really want a Plusnet footer on Madasafish emails etc. so if we were to change this to something more generic what would people suggest? Perhaps something like? -

Virus protection provided by IronPort.

Or maybe no footer at all? (although you'd then have to check the headers to ensure that the message had been virus scanned).

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I don't currently get a footnote and don't recall seeing one for ages (last time back in Postini or was it DSPAM days?)
My preference is not to have one, I regard them as unwanted "noise". Of course I'm used to looking at headers.
However if a message is added I favour sticking to two lines with the URL on a shortened second line (provided isn't needed):

On Force9 with MMM virus scanning enabled.

Edit: Found a message from Jan 2008, that has the Plusnet footer and had been through Postini - so possibly "no footnote" came in with IronPort.

I don't get the footer, I am on Force9 and I have AV enabled In MMM
My preference is not to have a footer, however I do like David's suggestion above.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I'd vote for no footer on the grounds of:

  • it doesn't add anything content wise

  • it isn't a 100% guarantee that the email is virus free

  • I'm not keen on having someone's free advertising on my email

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

On the grounds that saying something does not make it so, I would vote for nothing at all.
Putting something means at best that at a specific point in time, using a specific set of virus definitions, the mail was found to be virus free.
But of course, there is nothing to stop a virus, adding such a statement to the bottom of a virus infected message.
Likewise, I could type it on the bottom of my messages, and it would mean nothing.
Its just noise for the sake - ditch it.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I'd be in favour of having no footer as well, for the reasons laid out above..

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

As another thought, you could argue that the presence of such footers will lead to complacency in future.
We all need to assume that everything we receive is virus-ridden, until such a time as we can prove to ourselves that its not.

Bob do you mean at the bottom of the header ie
X-PN-Virus-Filtered: by PlusNet MXCore (v5.00)
X-PN-Spam-Filtered: by PlusNet MXCore (v5.00),

or at the bottom of the mail
No virus found in this incoming message.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I don't get a footer on my PN mail but on checking the headers I see that they have been scanned by IronPort.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I'm on Plusnet and don't see the footer. I'm strongly against such footers for all the reasons already given (and when installing AVG always turn off so-called certification for exactly the same reasons).

I'm also in favour of no footer.  Not convinced of what benefit it brings.

I don't get a footer, and for all the reasons stated here, I prefer it that way.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

I've tried sending my self emails and am not getting the footer added. I did wonder if it only applied to plain text or html emails only but have checked that also - still no footers.
As far as I am concerned it can stay that way.

Re: Virus footer suggestions please...

Aren't you all disappointed not be be getting something you don't want?
IMO PN should immediately reinstate the footer, and simultaneously provide an option so we can all turn it off.
