making local calls

hi,
some of the local numbers I ring work perfectly but others I have to input the area code in order for the phone number to be recognised
is this a problem with PlusNet's phone system or is it just a bug with non BT numbers not being routed correctly ?
not wanting to open a fault for it until I know if its normal

There was a change where for certain exchanges the prefix had to be added because they were running out of numbers - 01202 is an example

yeah I read an article about it just now http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/local-area-codes/summary
but that suggests the changes wont happen until next week (for the trial), besides that I live in taunton which isn't listed as one of the exchanges

01202 happened last year but that doesn't explain the Taunton situation

We have no restrictions on your calls as they are being made - we're not even aware the call has happened until we receive details from BTW at around 8.30pm each evening. This doesn't sound like a fault, more likely a 'feature' of the work Oldjim has posted about.

Is there any similarity in the numbers that don't work? Could you post the first few digits.

there business numbers for my landlord's works contractor, starting 6929XX
the reason I'm wondering about it is the normal numbers (old ones) worked just fine and they start with 3/4/5 but there old BT circuit numbers that have been around for 10+ years.
also I'm fairly certain my landlord uses an LLU contract for there connectivity (because there mobile's are part of the bundle with short dial numbers)
it could well just be a side effect of the works being done to extend the number pools of local numbers available but it does seem a bit strange not to have had an announcement stating its happening ...

What happens, for example, with VOIP accounts assigned to Geographical numbers?  Can these be called as local numbers (without prefix) from the same area code?

I've just rung my (Plusnet) VoIP number from my landline (without the area code) and it rang. Possibly other VoIP service providers require the full number even when calling from the same area code?

yeah its probably a number finding problem I had the exact same issue when ringing some of the new department numbers within the local council (they also start with a 692XXX)
i'll just use full dial code +number when I use the phone in future
