long tone as if message there

my phone tone is a long tone as if i have messages but when i dial messages it says i dont have any.So any ideas?i have disconnected and tried again to no avail

That is normal, if you use BT 1571 answer phone, it gives a tone then blank that repeats until you dial 1571 if you have messages

You'd normally get a broken dial tone if you had any 1571 messages.
I've run a line test as a precaution but no fault has been found.

A 'broken' dial tone will also be received if some kind of divert or similar facility is in place.
Try dialling *#001# ,and if any services are in operation, see here to cancel.

just tried that and it said call diversion in operation then went to pages of codes to cancel and tried all that said cancell call diversion but none have worked.any other suggestions

What happens when you start dialling?
