Because I have most numbers in my phone book, the name and number displays when I receive a call from someone in my book.

That means Caller Display is active on your line whether you realise it or not.

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

I did not select caller display when I signed up but perhaps I do have it as the name and telephone number shows when I receive a call or if I check the list of calls received.  Do all providers show a CLI for calls?

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

My phone is a Panasonic KX-TGA711F. It was originally a triple set but one stopped working a few years ago.  I then bought another phone trio but didn't like it very much and returned to this set. I will check tomorrow to see if I have caller display on my account.

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

What is the model number of the basestation?
As per the reply by itsme, it seems that the Message Indicator Service mentioned in Panasonic DECT manuals isn't officially support by TT but has worked in some cases:
http://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/My-Account-Billing/Voicemail-Indicator-on-Telephone-Handset-Displ...
Nonetheless, the required service is not common in the UK and I can't see any reference to BT supporting this.  Is there a reason why you don't use the built in answering machine instead of 1571?

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

I like all my messages to be in the same place and if I use the answering machine only, callers will not be able to leave a message if I'm on the phone and if I use both, I will have two places to check for messages. Also, it is so easy to get the handset, sit down and listen to your messages.  I thought everyone used this service. I really miss it since I moved to Plusnet. I no longer return calls promptly as I still look for the message symbol.  Also, we are very used to having it on our mobile phones so why not on our landlines.  Perhaps Plusnet customers do not have digital phones, only the dial type.

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

For clarification, caller display has no bearing on your reported problem.
As far as I'm aware, all phones that display a flashing light for 'message waiting' do so by periodically checking for interrupted dial tone.
I'll assume for the moment that even without the light, you are getting interrupted dial tone if you have a message waiting.
'Normal' dial tone comprises a mixture of two tones.
Now - this is a long shot, and I may be mis-remembering, but I've a feeling that there may be two types of 'interrupted' dial tone.
(1)  Alternate short periods of dial tone and silence.
(2)  Alternate short periods of dial tone and one of the component tones of normal dial tone.
Can you check which one you have?

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

I think the tone and the silence is equally paced but I am not an expert.
I recorded the tone and attached the file but it seems that an mp3 file can't be attached/saved.
Does any Plusnet customer see the the message waiting symbol on their phone screens. If not, then we are all wasting our time on this. I thought it would be a compatibility problem with my phones and if I bought a different phone type all would be resolved. That does not seem to be the case.

OK. Sounds like you're getting the right signal then - in which case I'm at a loss as to why your phone doesn't respond.

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

Give Panasonic a ring and ask them what type of message indication service is required in order for the phone to display the icon.  Notes I can find in manuals are very vague:
Quote
Voice mail service
Voice mail is an automatic answering service
offered by your service provider/telephone
company. After you subscribe to this service,
your service provider/telephone company’s
voice mail system answers calls for you when
you are unavailable to answer the phone or
when your line is busy. Messages are
recorded by your service provider/telephone
company, not your telephone.
When you have new messages, is
displayed on the handset if message
indication service is available. Please contact
your service provider/telephone company for
details of this service
.

Note that broken dial tone isn't the only method of signalling used around the world.

Re: What has happened to the message indicator symbol on my handset?

On other Panasonic models you can switch the MWI off, so please refer to the manual to see if this is the case with your Panasonic handset.

A game of ping pong?
As no Plusnet customer replied to say they receive this message indication symbol, I think this is not available with Plusnet.  The phone worked as it should with Talk Talk and does not with Plusnet. Therefore it is the Plusnet system that does not send the compatible signal.  Nothing to do with the Panasonic phone.
I thank you for your time in trying to resolve this but I'm now giving up. I feel there is no point in pursuing it any further.

Yes, but no one else has mentioned this. Plusnet/BT do not appear to send the compatible signal so I give up.

This is what a Panasonic Dect phone manual says:

your service provider/telephone company’s
voice mail system answers calls for you when

is displayed on the
handset if message indication service is
available. Please contact your service
provider/ telephone company for details
of this service.
