Transfer of existing phone number when transfering tp Plusnet

I am been told by Plusnet that i will need a new phone number when i sign up.
I have checked and the phone number is owned by Virgin media although my current provider is Sky.
I was under the impression that the company you were transferring to would make contact and arrange the transfer

Thanks for getting in touch.
When retaining a number from Virgin things are a little more complex. As Virgin are the range holder of the number as you have advised we request to bring this number to Plusnet. Although this is currently with Sky, it does not mean that we will be able to retain the number.
This does not mean that we will not be able to retain your number, and we will be able to try if you you wish.
