SMS messages using home phone land line

I asked the Support Cnetre the following question :
"Can I send and receive SMS text messages using my Plusnet Phone service (landline) ? I have to enter the SMS Receiving and Sending Centre numbers into the settings page of my handset to do this, but do not know whether Plusnet supports SMS messages ?"
I received the following reply :
"While we do not provide technical support for setting this up, as we use BT based lines it should be possible to set this up.  I would recommend checking our community forums (http://community.plus.net/) and asking about this there."
Does anyone have any information about this please ?
Thanks.

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

I think you might find this helpful https://www.btwholesale.com/shared/document/Support/FAQ/Voice/Wholesale-FLT-FAQs-v2.pdf
FAQ 30 contains the service centre numbers
Seeing as it's a standard BT wholesale ( I assume? ) provided service I really would have expected the CSC to be able to provide the information. Roll_eyes

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

I thought I was registered to receive text messages but got one earlier today from a mobile number, which arrived as a spoken message, which wasn't very clear. Dowloaded the doc above and redid my settings using that. Sent a message to my mobile phone OK (which also resulted in a silent call from the incoming service centre number) but sending from mobile to home address apparently isn't working as it goes to my Plusnet messaging service (which the original 'spoken' text message didn't).
It used to work fine from my old address but I'm not absolutely certain if that was before or after I switched to Plusnet from BT for landline.
I'm now getting odd 'silent' calls from the incoming service centre too after I've listened to my test messages from my mobile to landline - very odd!

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Mystery solved (I think). Had voice message saying text service was activated but that the line does not have caller display so I would receive messages via my provider's voicemail instead.
So, it appears that Plusnet's caller display is not compatible with BT's text messaging service. Hmmmmm.

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

It is compatible, just that caller display is a pre-requisite for this service (on either Plusnet or BT), if you do have caller display then there's a fault somewhere - Plusnet use BT Wholesale's caller display exactly as BT Retail do.

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Text messaging (as text) from/to my Plusnet landline works fine for me. Phone is a BT6500. I had to send a text message from my landline first to activate the service (as text).

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Thanks both. My phone was OK for texts several years ago and before we recently moved house but not many people send us texts - the one today was, I think, meant to go to one of our mobiles but sent to the landline by mistake. The main wired phone (BT diverse 6350) and both wireless handsets that came with it show caller display as they should (I'm paying Plusnet 99p a month for that!).
I can send texts from the phone OK (sent one to my mobile phone just to make sure it was activated) but not receive them as texts.
I'll open a ticket then and see if it can be sorted out.

Hi Mad Moggies,
Apologies for the repeat response on the ticket there. Caller display is definitely on and should be working fine, are you still unable to receive texts?

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Thanks Matt.
It still isn't working - just tried again from my mobile and I got a voice text call from the answering service. I've now turned voice texts off as previously tried so will try sending a text again in around 1/2 hour or so but doubt that will do the trick as it didn't do work after caller display was removed and re-added, just had silent calls from 0800 587 5252 and then voice texts once I turned that back on again.

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Hi there,
Apologies if I'm going over old ground but I've just had a look at the BT pages for SMS and there's a couple of things that might be worth trying.
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13702/~/how-can-i-start-using-bt-text%3F suggests sending a text to 00000 to get things going, but it also says sending a text to a friend should work - which I believe you've already done?
If so and it's still not behaving, then http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13700/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzY3MjI4ODI1L... suggests texting 'reset' (no quotes) to 00000 to reset the registration.
Hope that helps?

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Tried all those - several times. What's odd is that it works fine for texting from the landline phone but it just isn't receiving texts as texts, only as voicemail. One of the messages I got from BT said exactly that too (you can send texts but not receive them except as voice texts), in a different message from the one saying that caller display isn't enabled.
Tried after disabling receiving voice text and nothing (the silent messages come after I switch it back on, followed by the messages via voicemail).
Is there anything unknown to us on the line that might be stopping it work? We've only had this line for under 2 years and previous people were with both BT and Sky on separate lines but we had some swapping of wires to the house done by BT when there was a line fault.

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

I'm guessing you've already set it correctly (or it was set in the phone anyway) but have you checked the 'Receive Service Centre' number (080058752 or 0800587529) in your telephone handset(s)?

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

Thanks for the link w23. I hadn't seen that document before and though it doesn't mention the phone I have (Diverse 6350), it does have settings for model numbers immediately before and after (6250 and 6450).
Well, the 0800 number given for those 2 models doesn't have the final '9', so I knocked that off, reset receiving messages to the standard curfew, gave it 20 minutes to take effect, sent a reset text to 00000 - yet again - and the confirmation message came through as a text OK. Hurrah!  Smiley

The strange thing is that the shorter number was what I already had set in the handset when I received a text to voice message and posted here. I also had the outgoing number with the letter P in it, so changed both of them to what was in the document MisterW suggested to the OP, assuming the settings had been changed at some time. Sending a message still works fine with the all numerical number so it's still a bit of a mystery!

Re: SMS messages using home phone land line

It seems that Plusnet customer support still don't know about this.
I just asked this question, and spent 10 minutes on hold, until the customer advisor came back and told me that no, I can't send or receive text messages on the Plusnet phone service.
