Phone calls past midnight now no phone line

Hi. I know this might be difficult to resolve but our house phone rang 3 times around 0.30 with 'unknown' displayed number

My wife managed to catch the 3rd ring nothing on the end of line except electronic buzzing background noise. In the next hour we couldn't ring out or indeed ring in from our mobile phones

Any suggestions?

Current time is 01:23
Thank you

Re: Phone calls past midnight now no phone line

Hi Roy,

A warm welcome to the forums.  This is disconcerting.  It sounds as though the caller has held the line "off hook" in effect blocking the line - a technique used by scammers to "demonstrate / suggest" that they have the ability to cut your phone line off.

What signal do your mobile phones hear - engaged or unavailable?

I take it you have no dial tone?

Is the internet working OK?

Try running the phone line trouble shooter (phone faults link below).

Re: Phone calls past midnight now no phone line

Hi many thanks

Our mobiles tell us we are on a call

Internet seems fine and line is unlocked this morning. Weird

That call left the line on hook which lays somewhere between odd and suspicious. Eventually the line self cleared down the silent call as you’ve seen this morning.

Keep an eye on your phone bill less this was some odd ball phone scam.

To clarify - was it actually 'buzzing', similar to mains hum but higher pitched, or a series of fast-changing audio tones ie a data stream?

If the latter, then possibly a faulty or wrongly programmed fax machine or automatic telemetry device.

0030 seems an odd time to attempt a scam on a UK number.

Re: Phone calls past midnight now no phone line

It was a continuous buzz similar to a volume being set too high. I'll monitor it and report back any reoccurrence
Thanks all for helping so far
