@coopers If that loose socket is no longer used, I can't see why you can't chop it as close to the  main box as possible.

If it was me I'd remove the faceplate and take the cable completely out.

If the OP is hesitant to do that, chopping it near the box will suffice. So long as it's a clean cut such that there's no chance of any wires touching.

Oops, I should have added -

De-power the router first - remove cable - power up.

Not necessary if it's just a chop.
