Reading the thread it seems that nightsurfer has dialled #234#, after Gandalf reactivated caller ID, which would turn caller id off again...

As Dan states,

Try *234# to turn it back on.
*#234# reports the on/off state of caller id.
These codes are not listed on the (overlong) PlusNet call feature guide page https://www.plus.net/help/phone/call-features/
It does appear possible the OP may have accidentally turned of caller display by using the wrong code

Agreed, I found the codes on several posts /threads in this forum.
I would be interesting to hear from the OP whether *234# turns his caller ID facility on.

The facility is already on.
Dan advised on Monday how to turn caller ID on and check it was active.
I have been using *#234# all week and the message is "Caller ID will be displayed".

@nightsurfer the engineer report we've received indicates the issue is resolved. Can you confirm?

Hi,
no, unfortunately the issue is not resolved, still no caller displayed.
*#234# still reporting "caller ID will be displayed"

I received a call from the engineer today, he was at the exchange and reported that he found the caller ID turned off.
I tried the phone when I returned home and found that the caller is still not being displayed.
*#234# states caller id will be displayed.
Perhaps it is time to admit that my phone just won't display the caller ID?

Hi @nightsurfer,
I'm sorry to hear that your caller display still isn't working following the engineer work - I'll let @Gandalf know and he should be in touch over the next few days to discuss the best way forwards.
With the engineer finding an issue with caller display at the exchange, it seems unlikely that there is a problem with your handset. However, if possible I would recommend either borrowing another caller display compatible handset to see if it displays on your line or alternatively trying your handset at another property that has the caller display feature enabled to see if it works there.

I obtained an alternative phone to try on the line (Bush Atmos) and that displayed the caller ID OK.
I guess the Panasonic KX-TG-1401 is just not compatible.
Thanks Gandalf for your patience.

I'm happy to hear we've found the cause of the problem though it is a bit disappointing that your Panasonic handset doesn't work with caller display. If you need any further assistance please feel free to let me know.

@nightsurfer Good to hear that you now have CLID working.
I suspect, though, that the Bush phone is just a bit better at resolving a degraded signal.
Have you, or if not could you, try the Panasonic on a different enabled line?
