Is it possible to disable my telephone number?

I do not use the landline, there is no telephone plugged in.  Anyone who calls on that number gets no reply (or does it go to voicemail?)

The number was in use until recently. My worry is that someone might keep trying that number hoping to get hold of me. If they get an unobtainable tone, they would try an alternative.

Admittedly, it is not the major issue of the week. It would just be nice if I could flick a switch.

@MortimerCat In a word - no. You need the telephone number for your broadband to work.

Fix

@MortimerCat

Use the 1571 service to record a personal greeting message telling the caller how to contact you see https://www.bt.com/help/landline/using-bt-answer-1571-voicemail or do the same with your own answering machine.
