It was precisely that sort of rip-off which made me ditch making normal landline calls (BT) and start using VoIP many years ago.

Nowadays call packages are available which can help avoid that, but this was before they were common.

I've gone the other way and junked the landline altogether. Even the call packages tend to be more than I pay a month - £7.50 which does me fine. Unlimited calls, sms and includes data usage which I tend to leave on nowadays to get a seamless switch over between data and WiFi at home. True, I do have to factor in the phone cost itself but most mobile phones I buy tend to be priced below £200 and easily last 4yrs or so. And they are very convenient, not being tied to a house. Time to shop around.
