Dialling Code Changes from 1 Oct 2014 - 01224/01274/01273/01642/01908

From 1 October 2014, people living in the following areas will need to use the area code + phone number to make local calls:
Aberdeen (01224)
Bradford (01274)
Brighton (01273)
Middlesbrough (01642)
Milton Keynes (01908)
Those areas are running out of numbers so OFCOM has made the requirement that you need to use the area code when dialling locally.
Not sure if Plusnet have advised customers of the change yet, Sky and BT have:

The OFCOM page linked from BT is useful: http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/phone/numbering/dial-the-code/

Interesting giveaway on that OFCOM page
Quote
Telecoms companies will help to communicate the change to their customers. Ofcom also expects to engage with residents through local media, local councils and business groups. Together, Ofcom and the telecoms companies will ensure callers in the Brighton area are informed of the change in good time, and the local community is prepared.
Typical Roll_eyes we don't give a monkeys about the other places affected, they're all north of Watford Grin

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Linn, why don't you send an email to the users who are going to be affected ? This is just in case the user may not get the time to look at each and every posting on this forum.  Smiley
Many regards.

Re: Dialling Code Changes from 1 Oct 2014 - 01224/01274/01273/01642/01908

I very much doubt that this forum is read by more than 10% of all Plusnet users on an irregular basis, never mind regularly.
I avoided this forum for several years until I had problems and had to use the forum to get anywhere with the issues. Stayed around for the craic.   Smiley
This really should be a email/mail shot to the effected customers (which includes me btw)
Edit:  Forum info says that  26607 Members have posted here, the Broadband Usage Graphs says that there are a maximum of 742.99K users so that means 3.5% of all Plusnet users have posted here!

Agreed about sending out an email - should be targeted, if possible. I've received emails from both BT and Sky about the change.
It's going to be weird when people are allocated a local number starting 0 or 1!

Unfortunately I don't have the power to do that, however, I have forwarded the information on to the teams within the business who do have that power. Smiley It will ultimately be their decision how this progresses.
Thanks to everyone from all your input. As I stated earlier, what I can do is make sure that there's a sticky written in the Home Phone section.

Re: Dialling Code Changes from 1 Oct 2014 - 01224/01274/01273/01642/01908

Thanks Linn.
It might be worth making sure that team is aware of the OFCOM statement - http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/consultations/local-area-codes/statement
Quote
1.14 Now that the date for closing local dialling for these area codes has been confirmed, Ofcom, CPs and other stakeholders can begin to communicate the need to dial the area code to residents and businesses in the areas affected. Consumer awareness campaigns will ensure that the change is communicated effectively in the local areas. CPs will communicate with their customers directly and Ofcom will coordinate a wider consumer communications campaign in coordination with local stakeholders and the industry group. Further information on closing local dialling in the Five Area Codes can be found on our website at www.ofcom.org.uk/dialthecode.

I assume come the 1 Oct 2014, there will be some kind of automated error message when someone dials a local number without an area code in those affected areas

[quote=http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/phone/numbering/dial-the-code/]What if I forget to dial the code?
After 1 October 2014, if you dial a local number but forget to include the code, you will hear a free message asking you to redial.

Re: Dialling Code Changes from 1 Oct 2014 - 01224/01274/01273/01642/01908

We sent these emails at the start of September, your account was included in the send and a copy of the email is attached as a service notice to your account:
Quote
Hello,
We wanted to let you know that the way dialling codes work in your area is changing. From 1st October 2014 you will need to include the area code when you dial a local number with the same area code as yours – in the same way that you would if you were using a mobile phone.
Check below to find the dialling code for your area:
• Aberdeen – 01224
• Bradford - 01274
• Brighton - 01273
• Middlesbrough - 01642
• Milton Keynes - 01908
The change is being made by Ofcom and will free up new telephone numbers in your area, as current supplies are running low. It will have no impact on the cost of your calls.
If you would like any further information about this change, please visit: http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/phone/numbering/dial-the-code/

Hi Chris
I've just seen the service notice (as I never check these unless I have an ongoing fault), but I still cannot find any email on both my plusnet email or my personal email account.. Checked out spam/junk/other folders. Just thought I would mention it. But I knew it was happening so it wasn't an issue for me.
