Confused with home phone billing

I'm wondering if anyone can explain how the billing for home phone works? 
I've just had my direct debit come off for broadband, phone line and call plan up to 9th September 2009 and call charges up to 10th August 2009.  This is all correct so far but my query is that when I go into itemised bill in members centre it has my billing period as 22 July - 21 Aug 2009? and the calls that I have already paid for are still on this itemised bill. 
Why does my direct debit take me up to 9th Sept but the billing date is different?  Also, if the calls I have already paid for are still on my itemised bill how do I know I won't be charged for them again?
Hope someone can follow this as it does sound a bit confusing!! and help me.
