Well 0845 costs 4p a minute and is generally not included in call packages of most providers. I believe that companies that use it rake in a portion of the charge. They certainly do with 0870
My biggest beef with such numbers is being obliged to call them and in effect have to pay to complain
And being put on hold or having to listen to recordings i dont want to hear

Not all companies take a rake off. I believe that the BBC before changing to the 03 numbers did not and I know that a friend of my does not.
My friend set up a few 0845 numbers, just before the 03 numbers came in, so that he can trace the source of the call. A different number is used for different types of advertising, ie web, newspapers, billboards, public transport etc. This enable him to spend his advertising budget more wisely.

Re: BT cuts the cost of calling 0845 and 0870 to zero for many of its customers

Don't see what the fuss is all about... I use www.saynoto0870.com and have found alternative numbers for most of the expensive calls I used to make (as a few others have mentioned).
It is now quite rare that I have to call an 0870 or 0845 number, as I call 01,02 or 03 variations for free on my Plusnet Anytime phone service.... however my Doctor's surgery is one exception!!! (Grrrr!)
Anyway, with Say no To 0870 and Plusnet, I have most 0845 & 0870 calls for free, without the problems of being on BT!!!
I keep the website as a bookmark on my toolbar in my browser and look up any 08xx numbers before calling them, and it has axed my phone bills considerably. (note it also includes replacements for 0871 number and some premium rate numbers). I also lookup 0800 numbers which cost 20p a minute on my O2 mobile, and find 01, 02, & 03 variations which can then be called as inclusive minutes from my mobile. I recommend trying a search using the 08xx number first, and if that fails to get a match, try a search for the company name.
Brilliant website!!!

Agreed - brilliant site. Also, if anyone finds an alternative number that is not in the saynoto0870 database, take a few moments to add it.

As Mal says, the PN numbers are in, as is the alternative for Force9. However, like Pierre, it is entirely possible that I imagined it!

Ironically Plusnet have stopped giving out their o114 (sheffield) number for an 0845
I am not happy.
I have made a lot of referrals for Plusnet and one thing I was always pleased about telling was that we didn't have to put up with Indian call centres. That it was a Sheffield number and not an 0845 or 0870
People I persuaded to use Plusnet recently are not going to be so happy  that all that has changed
I certainly am not

Re: BT cuts the cost of calling 0845 and 0870 to zero for many of its customers

PUG have been very vocal on this issue since we first heard about it...
I hope we haven't heard the last on this topic.... and hopefully there will be some good news in due course.... (saw this post by Plusnet Staff about something possibly coming in the next month or so)
In the meantime PUG will continue to discuss with Plusnet about finding an alternative customers being charged to call 0845 number for contacting support, by any suitable means...
Currently though the 0114 number remains available for calling support, and is publicised on the front page in the help & support section of the website... it has just been downgraded a level in visibility whilst some issues are resolved.
