To avoid dialing these numbers there is a web site
http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php
that when you type in your 0870 number will give you an 010 etc. number if available
It works fine.

Yes, I always use it prior to calling one of these numbers. However, it is worth noting that it is only there by courtesy of the users adding to it so this is just a reminder that if anyone comes across an alternative number, don't forget to add it to their database.

Some companies (Sky in particular) close down the geographic numbers listed on Say No to 0870.
I looked up the number for Sky Customer Services and found an 01506 xxxxxx number. I used it for a couple of calls to CS about a year ago but when I called last month I was greeted with a message to "Please redial using 0870 xxxxxx".
Still worth looking on SayNoTo0870 first though!

I have had the same experience - I think that companies are getting wise to it.
I wish that Ofcom would step in and do something about the whol 08 thing, particularly in the case of GP surgeries.
