Prior to our move from TT whenever we had voicemail an "envelope" symbol was displayed on the handset. Now we are with PN all we get is a broken dial tone. It was really handy to be able to walk past the phone when we got in to see if we had any messages. Any ideas?

Depends what "mechanism" is used to trigger the envelope symbol. Have a look at your phone manual to see what it says. Personally I'm not familiar with this, but it could be something extra that TT provide on their LLU network that is not available free/automatically/at all on the BT WLR3 product that CPs/ISPs use.
I take it your phone doesn't have a built in answer phone?
