0870 and 0845 numbers

I have just received the email from Plusnet advising that 0870 and 0845 numbers will be included in the free calls with Home Phone from 22nd October.  This is excellent news but too good to be true.  I refuse to use 0870 and 0845 numbers as they are a rip-off, and instead refer to http://www.saynoto0870.com to find the geographic number instead.
So how is Plusnet going to fund these calls ?  I had heard that Ofcom challenged the industry and wanted to introduce changes but that they bowed to pressure from call centres and gave in.  Has Ofcom had a re-think ?
I cannot belive that Plusnet is funding these premium rate calls, so what has happened ?  have I missed soemthing ?

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

Since BT have been offering these free (when signed up to one of the standard offers) PN is just following suite.
Also I have found that a lot have either stopped using them moving to 03xx or 0871 (which of course isn't free)

03xx is regarded for charging purposes the same as 01xx & 02xx, from any supplier. BT are, and PN soon will be, including 0845 & 0870 in their inclusive minutes, so will only be free 24/7 if you're on an Anytime package, fom BT or PN.
0871 is in a class of its own, and is charged for at all time s by all suppliers AFAIK.

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

It is a good move from Plusnet but it does favour the Anytime user more than the Evening and Weekend customer as often businesses using 0845 and 0870 numbers are closed after 6pm and sometimes at weekends.

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

I see they have been damn crafty again and did not mention the 1p rise in the connection charge in the email. I think these connection charges are a right rip off and make a quick call very expensive.

@glloyd:
You are correct, no mention of that 1p increase in the connection charge in the email.  Come on Plusnet that was a bit on the naughty side, it would have only taken one sentence.

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

2nd rise in six months as well - The last one was also well hidden. I'm pretty sure any changes in charges should be informed CLEARLY  otherwise they are not enforceable.

Yay! But I never got that email Sad
It was only when I saw today's email which said "Calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers" that I realised it! Up 'til now, I had been laboriously logging into saynoto0870.com for each call!
Just looking back, checking through spam and trash...nothing about the email you got.
Never mind, it's a good thing it's happened now, just wish I'd know about it before..

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

be careful, as 0844 and 0871 are paid not free, its only 0870 and 0845 that are

Re: 0870 and 0845 numbers

@racquel, the email is showing on your account (sent 8th September). For future notifications it's worth updating your email address to one you use regularly (if it's not already).
pierre_pierre makes a valid point, it's worth remembering that 0844 and 0871 are still chargeable (along with some exclusions to free 0845 and 0870, such as dial up internet services).
