why is

why is millisecond called millisecond when its not a millionths of a second its a thousandth of a second?

It's not a millionth.
milli- 
a combining form meaning “thousand” ( millipede ): in the metric system, used in the names of units equal to one thousandth of the given base unit ( millimeter ).
Origin:
< French  < Latin,  combining form of mille  thousand

Erm.... I think this is to do with mille being italiano for 1,000 ? ? ? ?
( think Roman Roads)..... A Kilo metre is not a Heavy Weight Length is it?

That's cleared that up then. Just to add, for the OP, a millionth of a second is a microsecond.
