who says you cant get trojans in Linux

I am using a Linux netbook which rather restricts what you can do with the installed progams
the Firefox is rather old and not updatable
I managed to get a redirect trojan, "searchmagnified.com" that stopped me looking at the Hotel in wales I stopped at, It redirected me to an exotic location.
Googling the little beast it suggested a lot of .exe removal jobs, not on my netbook
think I have got rid of it by clearing various history and cach files

the correct web address is gwberthotel.com, a google look up goes to gwberthotel.net, via searchmagnified

Re: who says you cant get trojans in Linux

Why is your FF not upgradeable?  Is it a ROM Linux? Has the manufacturer gone out of business?
As to the torjan, looks like it is hooking into your FF proxy settings. See if you can change them back to empty.
It does sound like it is a cookie or installed FF addon. Try removing the addons one by one (or the ones you don't know about)

Everything is updatable.
What version of Linux are you running?

Re: who says you cant get trojans in Linux

I'd guess the original Xandros.
I'd get a USB pen drive (1Gb will do) and install Ubuntu on there instead.

Quote from: Sprite
Linux = bad

I would say what is bad is the ability to STOP you from using a PC & s/w you have BOUGHT just like M$ do with WGA <spit> If they think that your copy is illegal then they will stop it from being useable, that along with reporting back to HO all the time I would say is bad.

Well you see the thing isM$ aren't a democracy, they're not voted in, they're a private company who's sole purposes are to write software and then make money for it.
It's a commercial product. I'd say they have every right to try and protect it from piracy if they want to. If you were in their boat you'd do the same. I hear this "phone home" arguement quite frequently even on programming forums yet its the programmers themselves who moan about it who are the first ones to try and use the same technique in their own programs  Roll eyes

You have to draw a line somewhere though don't you.
