was it really 40 years ago

who remembers these or has any left http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12364921

Many sayings and phrases in the English language relate to our old money. Here are just a few:
"Spend a penny"
"You look like you have lost half a crown and found sixpence."
"A penny for your thoughts"
"It can turn on a sixpence"
"Bob-a-job week"
"Take the King's shilling"

I have a large box full to get rid of from when we cleared my mums house out  (she is still alive at 95)

I remember the changeover and how the "older" folk complained in the shops!  I found some old coins when I moved so gave them a friend's young children who were fascinated by the difference.

A 9/10 would probably be more appropriate or we'd end up with a pocketful.

I've still got a load of old coins somewhere.
I remember as a child eagerly checking through my change for a 1933 penny as there were only 7 known to be left and were worth a fortune.

Are there any former bank clerks here?
I seem to remember that coins were weighed for counting purposes. Silver: 5 shillings = one ounce,  Copper: 3 pence = one ounce.  It didn't matter what coins were in the mix

I believe they still are as I have taken bags of coins into the bank and they weigh the bags rather than counting coins in them.

Re: was it really 40 years ago

don't be in too much of a hurry to dismiss those old coins as worthless.  the threepenny pieces may have some rare dates among them, or specific designs that didn't land on many coins.  sixpenny pieces are also worth examining.  those before 1947 have a higher silver content.  if you have any shillings, look out for pre-1947 and also scottish 1956.  you'll probably find information on different styles and designs online.  some of those coins could be worth a bob or two.  good for ma for hoarding.

I think Wikipedia definition is pretty good.

A smirk refers to a smile evoking insolence, scorn, or offensive smugness.

I think an emoticon for that would be great for this forum  Roll eyes
