Re: new ford ka or a used mini???

No idea about the mini but the Ka (not sure about new one so you'd have to check) is chain driven meaning that you have no threat of the cambelt snapping and mashing up your engine. Believe it or not thats a common problem with most cars as many people don't get it changed in time and then SNAP!
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: new ford ka or a used mini???

Laugh if you want to..... I would recommend the Skoda Fabia.......... Diesel version.....
I got my Skoda Fabia 1.9 SDI (2001) at 55,000 miles, 5 years ago,  I got the garage to do a complete service, including change the cambelt, and they even fitted new front discs & pads, cos their MOT inspector said they needed doing before he could issue me with a new mot on completion of the sale.... I have regularly changed the cambelt at 50,000 miles with oil and oil filter changes at 10,000 miles, and it still going .... present mileage 135,000 .... oh yes, and I just had the clutch done a month ago, at 130,000 ... next cambelt change at 150,000 (only 15,000 to go)
why Diesel?  well, it does just on 60 miles per gallon. compared to the petrol version of 32-35 ..... that`s about £10 to do 120 miles, compared to £20 for the petrol version....  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Think for a first car you need to make a statement, thus I can highly recommend the Bugatti Veyron Smiley

I hope to be in the market for a new car soon. Won't do as much for the image as a Bugatti, but look at the Hyundai i10 if you're after a few "creature comforts" for the price.

Re: new ford ka or a used mini???

I don't think Skoda is a joke any more - they are very good cars for the money.  Since being part of Audi / VW , and the old pre WWII Skoda company was a good engineering company in it's own right.
I presume that 60 mpg is an average - on a long run it should be even higher unless you have a heavy right foot ?.

Re: new ford ka or a used mini???

Get a second hand car for your first car because you will prang it at some point and wonder why the hell you paid 3 times the price for a car that does the same thing. Wink

Also think about your insurance, especially if you are young.
As Euge said, get a second hand car - if you think a Ka is pretty you'd be fine with anything Cheesy

Re: new ford ka or a used mini???

I consider myself a half decent driver but no amount of good driving in the world (speaking for yourself) will stop someone driving into it at the car park in Sainsburys or any other equally great generic supermarket

Unfortunately, you're only as good as the worst driver on the road with you  Shocked
I agree with going second-hand for your first car. You'll be heavy on the clutch and gas and will be at a higher risk of an accident. I had a Mark III Escort for 6 months then got a Nissan Bluebird. Still with Nissan (Primera) 20 years later.
