Re: know wunder ppl carnt spel

And the reason people can't spell? (other than English schools stopped teaching English spelling and grammar 15 years ago)
Actually that's the reason that's been given for the poor take-up of foreign languages in schools; since in order to learn a foreign language, you need an understanding of grammar, and youngsters today don't know their nouns from their infinitives.  Huh

Re: know wunder ppl carnt spel

'Tis true; I learnt much more about grammar when being taught Russian than I did being taught English. English lessons weren't about the actual ‘cogs’ of the language much at all… instead they were more about general comprehension, critical thinking, writing stories, that kind of thing. Always frustrated me a bit.

My experience was the same, didn't know anything about English grammar until I started Italian Lessons at the age of 55

Re: know wunder ppl carnt spel

Is it the fact that we do not have to worry too much about grammar with spoken English because unlike most other languages we do not have gender to consider so less attention is paid to written English?
My shortcomings in English have shown up when I have had French and Dutch people staying with me and they have ask questions on the structure of English which I could not answer.

Re: know wunder ppl carnt spel

It's almost become a cliche that I work with 60 people who speak English as a second language, unfortunately they're all English and don't have a first language.  Huh

Yep - even some of the really small children can speak it!
