Re: in the days of 28k modems...?

I remember the days of the 28.8k modem.  Good times.. good times..
Although I'm not sure a reminiscing thread is suitable for the Rants and Raves forum... or maybe there is more detail than your post implies?

I'll see your 1200/300 modem and raise you 1200/75 modem (prestel dialup) or even 300 baud acoustic couplers - Sadly I have used all three!

I remember 50 baud telex circuits ! - so 1200/75 prestel / BT Gold was an imptovement.

The slowest I've used is 9600 – good old CSD (this was before such luxuries as GPRS were available, and HSCSD was beyond my budget).

I'll fetch it down from the loft when it's warmer.
I think you could switch it to 1200 full duplex by removing a switch limiter inside but it wasn't allowed and was marked in red.

I've never owned anything older than a Dg834gt.
My first Internet was when Sky came out few years ago. Didn't know all these existed until now.

Poor marketing for Micronet / Prestel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micronet800 ;
It looked very like what we still have as ceefax on analogue TV.
There was also the BT Telecom Gold email system - but so few people had accounts it was practically useless for many

- both systems early 1980's
