Virtually all computer recruitment is via agencies.
If you are over 40 you are classed as too old.
If you are unemployed for too long your skills will be classed as outdated.
Try more than one agency.

Re: any ideas how i can get a job..

Google is your friend..... as someone said to me....
I just put in C# jobs and it came up with this page...

http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/search/c-plus-c-sharp-jobs
I am sure there are more "related" pages that you may find worth persuing....
Good Luck... It can be tough and disappointing... just keep bashing on...  Wink

Re: any ideas how i can get a job..

I've been looking on TotalJobs and CWJobs for a little while and have very recently landed myself with a new job in your very field.  During this I've had countless adverts for the London area, even though I've only been interested in the North West.  Best advice I had was from one agency about re-designing my CV.  Since doing that I've had a few interviews and a couple of job offers, one of which I turned down.  If you want to PM me an email address I'll happily send you my CV if it will give you any tips.

Re: any ideas how i can get a job..

Couple of suggestion, (won't be much help)
One would be to try one of the lesser know languages (Python comes to mind, in relation to ArcGIS....as extensively used by local government).
Other is to offer 'data-cleanup services' as a temporary measure, friend of mine (over 55) received several Mail-shots to his address (not his name) from a high street financial institution (with whom he had no dealings), he was so annoyed by it he rang the organisation concerned and offered to 'clean up' their data, that was 3 years ago, he is still working.

CV I saw recently (as pdf) had an embedded video clip as an introduction, had everybody reaching to redo their CV's.

@journeys, that interesting about the video clip on a CV.  I wonder hoe effective it would be.  The normal advice is to keep a CV to 1 or 2 pages and I wonder if an employer would bother to take the time to view the video.

Very effective, it got the candidate straight to the interview stage (out of over 100), the video clip was very short (about 12 seconds) showed the candidate walking along a footpath bit of background music, then zoom in "Good morning, my name is XYZ and I'd like to apply for the position of ABC" then something about the CV being attached.
The CV was laid out differently, designed for on-screen viewing, not printing, all the details where on the first page which was a Hook to the rest of the CV, laid out in 3 sections
a) Who they were (john smith, address etc)
b) What they were (professional, motivated 'C' programmer etc).
c) Then about 60 keywords, (organisations, methods, qualifications, experience hot-linked to the rest of the CV with bookmarks).
I don't know how many pages the CV ran to, must have been more than a dozen and included hot-links to URL addresses and email address of previous companies and employers

don't be fooled by the number of posting in london, many are duplicates and many are ghosts by agencies trying to trawl in cv's

Re: any ideas how i can get a job..

I'm an ex-programmer.
Haven't worked in anything much for the last 5 years (too old at 50+).
This was before the recent depression too.
I think you will find that programming for 30 years equips you for remarkably few jobs.  Smiley

Re: any ideas how i can get a job..

the thing that annoys me most is the last place i worked at, well over half the programmers there were from outside the UK and EU
with active discrimination to hire people from india
not like they were good quality either...
absolute madness
