and you thought we had a cold winter

So far this month, at least 14 major weather stations in Alberta have recorded their lowest-ever March temperatures. I'm not talking about daily records; I mean they've recorded the lowest temperatures they've ever seen in the entire month of March since temperatures began being recorded in Alberta in the 1880s.
This past Tuesday, Edmonton International Airport reported an overnight low of -41.5 C, smashing the previous March low of -29.4 C set in 1975. Records just don't fall by that much, but the airport's did. Records are usually broken fractions of degrees. The International's was exceeded by 12 degrees.

Re: and you thought we had a cold winter

I was away on business when we had all the snow in the UK a few weeks ago, I was with some people from RIM who are based in Ontario, one to the guys there said -40C was not uncommon, but when they use a baking tray to slide down a hill, it only lasts a couple of goes because ti gets so cold it becomes brittle and breaks! Safe to say they laugh at us when we have problems at -5C and a few inches of snow.

Or global cooling caused by global dimming.

Re: and you thought we had a cold winter

Maybe global warming is melting the ice caps, and the resultant water moves south - and that is why places like Canada are cooler ?.

Re: and you thought we had a cold winter

Well the UK will get much cooler if the Gulf Stream disappears as they reckon it will.

we'll all be living in canal boats, without any canals. The caravans of the sea, less like Kevin Costoomuch's film

Re: and you thought we had a cold winter

UK & Europe would get a lot cooler if the North Atlantic Drift shifted south OR if as the doom merchants are saying the  Atlantic Conveyor shut down - as for gulf stream disappearing ... extremely unlikely as it's powered by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico - could be deflected south a bit by the cooler waters of the Labrador current though
didn't have a severe winter here, didn't get much snow

Very interesting Jim
While it can explain a lot of things, I think there are lots of things about the world that will never be explained by science.

Re: and you thought we had a cold winter

Go on I'll repeat it.
Too much pollution from car exhausts causes global warming.
Planet heats up and polar caps melt increasing sea level.
People have less distance to travel to sea side so less pollution.
Planet cools down and Polar caps re-freeze lowing sea level.
It's a cyclic thing.
