Yet another scam.

Has anyone else seen the 'Argos' competition webpage? It pops up uninvited offering you three chances to win an iPhone.

Argos confirm it is a money-making scam - nothing to do with them.

Attached to the page are many 'likes', all fake of course.

The only chance players have is the sure chance they will lose their money.

Hopefully I have blocked it using my adblocker.

Re: Yet another scam.

Does it ask for money?  If so it would probably be illegal, so obviously not run by a reputable company like Argos.

Re: Yet another scam.

I didn't go any further than erasing it. The web page popped up and while I was writing an email (Plusnet Webmail). It continued to pop up several more times. I've never seen anything like it before.

Very annoying!

The competition looks like some sort of a tombola - competitors have to click on to a particular red spot to 'win.'

I think that some sort of post and packing fee or an admin charge will then be asked.

I did a full scan of my system - nothing found.

Re: Yet another scam.

Hmm - that shouldn't have popped up, depends on what sites you were browsing at the time.

If none, which sounds like the case here I would definitely check your system. Don't rely on one anti virus to pick up everything.

Was the browser shut down while you were writing the e-mail?

EDIT: See you were using webmail - I am not sure if PlusNet put ads on their webmail. Still - something does not seem right to me.

Re: Yet another scam.

Hello Alex,

The pop up web pages are random - a full page tab just opens taking over the page I am working on.

I ran a Malware-bytes full scan which retrieved 5 threats : Pup.Optional.Polarity...

Not sure what they are but they are in quaratine now.

Thanks for you advice.

Re: Yet another scam.

Thanks for that Shutter. I use Firefox and I had previously checked box to clear cookies on shut down.

Had a look and found 'Keep cookies until Firefox closed' unchecked.

Not sure what happened there but all sorted now.

@cyrilclark1  I use two cleaners... at the end of every day... to clear all sorts of rubbish, and then the new day starts (hopefully) clean & healthy.

Note... when using CCleaner... go into the settings, and choose to "overwrite" using the U.S. DOD version of at least 3 overwrites..
