Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

At least one corner of the depressingly gloomy afternoons has been passed!

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

I thought that didn't happen until the 21st, Midwinter, and the 21st June being the day that nights start to draw in?

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

You've made the classic error - assuming the latest sunrise and the earliest sunset occur on the same day - they don't. The winter solstice is the day when the difference between the two is at it's minimum.
Try Googling earliest sunset
E.g. http://www.nmm.ac.uk/rog/2008/12/earliest_sunset_in_the_norther.html
(Guess who had that link open ready knowing someone would fall in to the trap!)

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

I just knew when I was looking up Winter Solstice that there would have to be a catch!!!
Unfortunately the mornings will be darker till about 8 days after the solstice (just done a bit of Googling!).

Grin Grin Grin
If you dig a bit deeper you will find that it's not 8 days for all latitudes - but I can't remember if the closer to the equator you get the smaller or larger the difference.

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

Interesting; I did know the fact of which jelv speaks, but I wasn't aware it made a whole week's difference – I thought it was only a couple of days. Glad to know that nightfall will be getting later from tomorrow onwards.

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

It's already getting lighter, but unless you can find somewhere that gives sunset to the second the difference is too small to see as yet.

Not noticed much difference here in the evenings - certainly the mornings are darker..............

Re: Yay! The evenings are getting lighter

Oh I see! You do learn something new every day.  Sunset on the 15th is 3:51, and on the 16th its 3:52, whilst conversely it's going to stay darker longer in the mornings, and on the 21st we have the least amount of daylight because the longer mornings catch up to the longer sunset sooner.  We gain 4 seconds of darkness in the morning, but only gain 3 seconds of sunset in the evening.

That's the site I use – only gives sunset times to a minute's precision however, not the seconds jelv was looking for.
