XBMC help please

Xbmc was great when I had it on my old xbox 1, but the new "evolved" edition takes a bit of getting used to. Maybe if you use it as an internet portal it is better but I want to play media from my local server via nfs, like I have been doing for 7+ years. (Before I switched to Linux even!)
I have my media organised as I want it, I don't want to have xbmc re-shuffle it so the stuff I am watching now is mixed up with archived (or stuff in a different folder) stuff. I have a simple folder layout
1.Watching - contains all the stuff we are watching at the moment, latest series'
2. Documentaries - stuff I will watch occasionally
3. My Personal videos
4. SHMBO's videos
5 anything else
Each of these folders has sub folders with the series name in it and then the video under it.
That and my Movies are harder to find since it scanned them.
Is there a simple way of getting something like sorted by genre?
Now XMBC scans this and mixes them all up, (only tried on the pi) into its own criteria, TV series name, actor etc. I don't want or need this.
Does anybody who knows xbmc know how to change this?

Re: XBMC help please

Should this be in the Mac/Linux section - if so I will move it

Re: XBMC help please

I presume just browsing in files mode doesn't give you what you want here?

Re: XBMC help please

@old Jim It isn't specific to Linux or any OS. The app xmbc will run on M$/mac/Linux/Android. So I put it here.
@Kelly, well browsing gives me the list of files as xbmc has sorted it, not the way it is on my server. This is if I press the TV button.

Re: XBMC help please

OK played with it more at lunch time.
If I add the TV feed then the files starts off showing me the right path, but soon disintegrates.
It seems to want to RENAME my folder names. I have a folder called series, with some older series' in that we may want to watch. It has decided to call it something else, X-men I think it was, Documentaries is now KML-Documentaries .... I DON'T want or need them renamed.

Re: XBMC help please

You'll have to browse it in file mode.
The TV and Movie libraries depend on you having everything organised in a tree structure of Series Name and Season xx.

Re: XBMC help please

Does the Navi-X addon work for anyone?
I used to get download speeds of up to 8MBytes/sec...
But now it just sits there...

Re: XBMC help please

@CX I do have it organised like that. Just in my own structure.
@VFD No idea what is it?
Tried it for real last night, first episode worked fine, but the second (different series) gave me AUDIO only even though it displayed a thumbnail. More work required.

Do you mean you have something like this:

TV
 30 Rock
   Season 01
     S01E01.mkv
     S01E02.mkv
   Season 02
     S02E01.mkv
     S02E02.mkv
 Buffy the Vampire Slayer
   Season 01
     S01E01.mkv
     S01E02.mkv
   Season 02
     S02E01.mkv
     S02E02.mkv
 Documentaries
     unsorted_documentary.avi
     some_other_documentary.mkv
 Series
     random_episode.avi
     some_other_random_episode.avi
 The X-Files
   Season 01
     S01E01.mkv
     S01E02.mkv
   Season 02
     S02E01.mkv
     S02E02.mkv
etc

And the "proper" series folders are being correctly scraped, but the Documentaries and Series folders are not?
In that case, I would suggest creating a dummy tvshow.nfo file in those two directories with the details you want. Something like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<tvshow>
 <title>Documentaries</title>
</tvshow>

Then just put the individual files into a subfolder, e.g. Season 00. That should prevent XBMC from falsely identifying the series by matching the folder name against TheTVDB.

Re: XBMC help please

The individual series are fine, it is the overall container that is being renamed.
I.e. My Documentary folder is like this.
hairybiker@duo:~$ ls TV/Documentary/
BBC Atlas Of The Natural World Congo
BBC Atlas Of The Natural World Scandinavia
BBC Atlas Of The Natural World Wild Africa
Britains Greatest Machines

Etc. the individual folders are fine, but it is renaming the container (Documentaries) to KML-Doc's
Maybe I need to move the TV scraper further in? I.e. not the top level.

Re: XBMC help please

It's a long time since I configured my XBMC, which runs in Raspbmc on a Raspberry Pi.
I think what I did was to go into Settings and turn off anything that mentions "Library".
This stops XBMC from scanning your media files and putting them into the XBMC Library system.
As I understand it, the XBMC Library system is what is categorising your media as it sees fits.
Like you, I have my media in file hierarchies, and have no need of more 'sorting'.
It may well be that there is a loss of metadata about films and shows that I don't see.
If there is a loss of metadata i.e. Cast Listing, Poster Images etc., you'll have to decide which is more important to you:
being able to have your files presented as you wish or have the admittedly nice info about your media.

Re: XBMC help please

Ok been using it for past couple of nights. Seems fine now that I have turned off the library as suggested above.
However I have a couple of series that just play sound rather than video/sound. They play fine on my local install of xbmc but not on the pi.
Anybody got any clues? Codec issues?
Interestingly the video is :-
Format                                  : MPEG-4 Visual
Codec ID                                : MP43
Codec ID/Info                            : Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 (pre-standard)
on the ones that don't display.

Re: XBMC help please

I had problems trying to get MP3 tracks to play.
So I constructed a "grey", virtually null video track and
used it to convert them to MP4/AAC "videos". They
play well now.

Re: XBMC help please

Googling about just now looks like that codec is not supported. Will re-encode them to mkv or xvid.
