Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

Not really, because they would still be targeting innocent civilians - whether they should be living there or not.
The problem for Israel is that it's impossible to remove the threat of rocket attacks without killing innocent people.

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

Israel is not a signatory to the Geneva Convention Protocol I which outlaws indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations. You'd think given their history they'd be keen to sign-up.  I rather suspect Hamas are putting on these rocket attacks to provoke the Israeli government. In reality with Iron Dome the rockets cause little damage in proportion to the wholesale destruction and deaths caused by their artillery and bombs. The damage to Israel's reputation is enormous..
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Can they be a signatory, is Palestine a sovereign state recognised by the UN?

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

google has the answer ......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_recognition_of_the_State_of_Palestine
and from another wiki page In 1989, the PLO submitted a letter to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs which stated...

whilst Israel hasn't signed protocol 1, so as the military rulers of Palestine Hamas are the only party guilty of the alleged crimes regardless of any action the Israelis may or may not have taken .....

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

The Geneva Convention is only as good as long as it's enforceable, which it will not be with Hamas (irrespective of whether the PLO/PLA agreement is accepted).
If Israel stopped their attacks, Hamas would still fire rockets (they've ignored the three ceasefires so far). But the longer Israel goes on trying to remove the Hamas threat, the more innocent people get killed and the more support grows for Hamas.

Gaza is not just about them, it’s about us, too
She lay in my arms. Just weeks old, a tiny baby. Her Palestinian father had just handed her to me at the infernal steel border building at the exit of Gaza into Israel. She did not cry. She just looked at me with her beady, dark eyes.

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

Despite the ceasefire, there were 3 mortar attacks from Gaza. Israel maintained their ceasefire in response.

@itsme
Excellent map of what's happened since 1946.
I wonder if Israel is really winning ?
The destruction of property and lives is far in excess of what's required. They could have gone in with ground troops and gone through many of these buildings, it would have cost more Israeli soldiers lives but more innocent lives would have been saved, by innocent I mean mainly women and children.
As more people are killed support for Israel will decline in countries that previously supported them, someone said it's about winning Hearts and minds and Israel is certainly failing in that area.

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

Compare and contrast... the size of Gaza to London. And 40% of Gaza now falls inside the free to fire on civilians zone.

Re: Would YOU fight for Gaza?

your aware of course that a lot of kids and women have previously been suicide bombers attacking school busses and restaurants throughout Israel ?
only a baby could be considered innocent and only after its been strip searched which is why the Israeli border control points are a series of bomb proof rooms where anyone trying to traverse from Palestine into Israel is required to strip and prove there not carrying anything dangerous ....
in reality regardless of who is or isn't morally correct in there actions no country willingly uses up lives of its countrymen when there is another option, a look through history at the conflict in Ireland (north and south) shows we have done the same thing just as any other better equipped nation has done, (Russia /china have done it with breakaway zones, America did it with Vietnam and so on)  whenever someone takes up arms to publish there message the bear they poke always takes up bigger better and crushes them with overwhelming force, and every time they take more land away as punishment (something the dividing wall they tried to build in the past would of prevented from being possible)
is it right probably not, but then again no nation has ever been forced to give up lands it won through force of arms (many have chosen to do so after many years of occupation just as the UK did with HongKong...) and despite protestations other places like Gibraltar have not been released from occupation so trying to force such conditions on a legitimate nation that has won through force of arms land from another that the rest of the world isn't willing to abide by is stupid ....
