World War One 100th Anniversary

Quote
On the morning of 16 December 1914, the shipping town of Hartlepool in north-east England was bombarded by the German Navy during its first attack on the UK's home front during World War One.
During the 40-minute attack, 1,150 shells were fired, devastating large areas of the town. It left 130 people dead and hundreds more injured.
On the 100th anniversary, listen to archive recordings of survivors recalling the attack.

And Scarborough and Whitby
Radio York and I think local BBC news are covering commemorative events.

Although I now live in York and have heard all about Scarborough on Radio York, I am a Monkey Hanger by birth!

Re: World War One 100th Anniversary

Ahhh, memories!
My old gran used to tell us kids about the bombardment in 1914!
The first British soldier to die on British soil in WW1 died at the bombardment at Hartlepool. He was on a gun battery.
See http://www.heughbattery.com/ for details of the event!

Re: World War One 100th Anniversary

I wonder what your old gran would have to say about Sainsbury's using the first world war in their Christmas marketing campaign ?.
Here is a Youtube video of Russell Brand pointing out how the advert exploits the nostalgia of war for the purpose of selling more chocolate.

Re: World War One 100th Anniversary

I always thought of Hartlepool being a bit of a bombsite, but never realised it actually WAS a bombsite... Shocked
