World Maths Day 2010

at
http://www.worldmathsday.com/2010/Default.aspx?
Mathematics competition between  youngsters of different ages.
Any ideas/explanation as to why in the 14-18 age group, the Turkish (20% of top 100) and Malasian's(30%)  appear so good?

Re: World Maths Day 2010

Focused education?  Over here we overwhelm the poor kids with so many different subjects and have to ram so many subjects into them that the overall quality lowers for everyone?  Do we really need to spend 1/2 a day a week teaching kids the meaning of life?

Serious though the Earths best mathematicians have nearly all come from the mid east to the Indian subcontinent, not sure if it is their teaching or just Genes

Re: World Maths Day 2010

I like maths; I tend to think it's far more useful than some people give it credit for. I did a maths A-level which, whilst leaving me far from being an expert at the subject (A-level maths barely scratches the surface of modern mathematics), did teach me a few things which I have actually used on numerous occasions in day-to-day life since then. It rather astonishes me how people who're very bad at maths (my aunt can't even do division) actually manage to get by. Shocked

Re: World Maths Day 2010

My wife did a Maths degree (with stats and applied maths, which is the super difficult stuff), so she's a lot smarter than me.
On the other hand, I can put the car in the garage without adding attractive new stripes down the side, so who's laughing now?

Re: World Maths Day 2010

Grin I did some applied maths too (mechanics) as part of my A-level, although i can't remember too much of it now. Seem to recall generally finding it easier than the pure mathematics though actually. My favourite branch of maths however was something else; it was a module we did called ‘decision mathematics’ which I believe is a subset of discrete maths.

So did mine, and so did I (not at the same place or time).
If you want something difficult try Differential Geometry.  Crazy
(especially the parts relating to General Relativity, space-time etc.)

I always had problems with differential and integral calculus, and the square root of -1

Re: World Maths Day 2010

Its a sin of the times.
I was good at maths all the way through to A level, then went to study mechanical engineering and ended up with the world's worst maths lecturer. It all went downhill from there!
