Words to ban!!!

There are some words constantly used that drive me mad, no more than the word "Affordable" i.e. "affordable housing". What the hell is affordable? It's a pointless useless word.

'Affordable' is relative and that's the problem with it.

Many advertisements use "worth" when they mean "usual price".  My immediate thought is  "not to me".

Or, more often, "maximum price"
Worse still is "free" when they mean "included in the price (whether you want it or not)"

No, that's to catch the fools who think they really are getting something for nothing. Those who make use of it know exactly what they are doing. Just like pricing things at £##.99.

Why is it pointless? It makes sense to me. Huh

Re: Words to ban!!!

Psychologically the .99p is a good selling point.  A few years ago an experiment was carried out where certain items were priced in full pounds, £10, £14, £20 etc.  The same items were then priced £9.99, £13.99, £19.99 etc and placed close to the rounded up items.  Sales of the .99p items far outsold the ones that were rounded up.
It appears that a person looks at £9.99 sees the £9 and thinks it is a lot cheaper than £10 Wink

Re: Words to ban!!!

Was it in the 80's when M&S changed their pricing policy to round figures up to whole pounds?

Re: Words to ban!!!

Some words seem to be fashionable until another one comes along. For some time politicians for some time liked the word "Fundamental"  now they start every sentence with "Well".

Re: Words to ban!!!

And Australlian cricket captains start each sentence with the word 'Look...'
BTW, why do tennis seeds always 'crash' out of tournaments and welfare cuts always 'savage'?

sorry this is off topic but
The reason for pricing things with the one penny less than the pound dates from pre electronic days to force the shop assistant to put the transaction through the till to give the penny change. Rather than just pocket the money with no record of the transaction on the till roll  Roll eyes Smiley

Re: Words to ban!!!

I believe that back before 1971, if something cost £1, you handed over a pound note.
If it was 19s and 11d you could (conceivably) pay with coins.
BTW Just bought a car. It cost £6,995 (and no pence).  Grin
Why is petrol priced in decimal fractions of a penny per litre?
e.g. 138.9p/litre
I don't get that. Angry

Pity petrol wasn't sold more honestly by putting up £6.31 / Gallon.
But that would shock a lot of drivers and depress most people.
The way things are going I soon expect to see 89.2p / Teaspoon.
