Re: Women only Carriages

I'm old enough to remember "Ladies Only" carriages on British Rail. These could even be found on the old slam-door carriages of the London Transport Metropolitan Line.
I seem to recall if a train was the through corridor type the interconnecting doors were locked into the ladies only section.
Whether this actually made females feel safer from the unwanted attentions of men could be debatable. Would a harassed woman feel safer alone in a ladies only section or hope to get the assistance of a "Sir Galahad"  in a mixed carriage these days? With the seeming reluctance of people to get involved these days in a dispute for fear of being prosecuted themselves, I think this would be a good question.

Re: Women only Carriages

Excellent idea, think of all the advantages of having men only carriages.

Advantages,
More space for a start as you wouldn't need toilets, just wind the window down.

@nadger, I've been watching the programme. A great insight into the operations of Indian railways. Anyone complaining of not getting a seat on the way to work should look at this prog Wink Wink

Re: Women only Carriages

ah yeah, ...... but..... just compare the fares......

when you pay the "going rate" on commuter lines these days... it SHOULD guarantee you a seat.... BUT... the big problem is, the number of passengers... to seat them all would require 3 to 4 X  as many trains in the same space of time.... or the trains would need to be (probably) 5 X longer... meaning longer platforms.... and some stations not being called at, because they cannot extend the platform length.....

Re: Women only Carriages

I understand on Crossrail the platforms are double the normal length. Not sure what they are doing with the trains though.

Re: Women only Carriages

They also used to allow smoking on London Underground carriages before it was banned. Maybe they'll ban wimin too.  Wink
