Winter Fuel Payments

The following statement appeared in one newspaper and I wonder if someone can explain it or is it incorrect ?
Pensioners will lose their crucial winter fuel payment ' top up' this year. For the past three years the £400 payment has been topped up by £50 for people aged 60 and over and by £100 for those aged 80'
If the statement is correct which pensioners are they talking about ?

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

What annoys me are these people who says that the WFA should be done away with, I suffer from a lung disease and Mrs P has severe asthma attacks and during the really cold weather we need heat, don't know how we would have managed over the last winter without the heating allowance, we would more than likely be both dead.
So I say to the WFA knockers don't do it you never know YOU may RELY on it

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

If you only got 2*£100 then you were underpaid as the house is entitled to £250. This is either paid to one individual at £250 or 2 people at £125.
And I'm one that believe it should be stopped as it's not limited to pensioners but to people over he age of 60.

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

By all means stop the payments but replace them with a decent state pension. If thatcher had not cut the link between inflation and the rise in pensions we would all be better off by at least £30 a week !
Even at that we would still be behind some of the pensions paid to our EU partners (even though we will be asked for money to bail them out)

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

You are still going to get more out of the system than you paid in unlike children being born now that is predicted to pay more in than they will get out.

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

That actually isn't correct.
The BBC report noted in the budget thread grossly misrepresents the actual study which ignores all the contributions we have already made and just looks forward based upon a number of assumptions which may or may not be valid

The following statement appeared in one newspaper

Somehow they've twisted everything round and delivered a nonsense message....
The "top-ups" (£50 or £100 if over 80) added in recent years have been withdrawn, so a £250 (over 60 in the household) payment reverts to £200 and the £400 (over 80) payment reverts to £300, from 2011-12. Hope that's clearer.

If you got a few minutes calculate how much you believe that you have paid in taxes etc when you have been working. Then calculate how much state pension you will draw from 65 to 80 then add on top of this eduction, medical treatment etc then tell me that the BBC report has not taken contributions into account.

This has been discussed all day today at:

Maybe the threads should be merged.

Re: Winter Fuel Payments

I would rather let this one wither on the vine as it would really mess up the flow of this thread given the massive time overlap
