Windows Update

My computer flagged up that there were Windows updates available.
I was shocked at the number of updates in the queue...........ONE Shocked
I checked on the update and it said

This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease lots of money from you.

Well it actually said

This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.

but I knew what they meant.

It could also mean

This update helps Microsoft make improvements to the current operating system in order to stuff up the end user experience of previous version(s) of Windows to force you to upgrade to 8.1 or latter revision(s).

Re: Windows Update

Good of them to rush that out - off schedule, too .. particularly while the US is still recommending people stop using IE until MS fix the latest glitch

If you have no intention of invoking the "upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows" (presumably an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and/or Windows 8.1 Update), there appears to be no compelling reason to install the patch.

I'm far more likely to trash and re-install W7

Re: Windows Update

Reading between the lines plus a bit og guesswork.
The patch is targeted at Corporates, hence the distribution via WSUS.  The gameplay being to make the transition path from Win 7 or Win 8.0 to 8.1 easy and without all of the current time wasting hassle..
Good move if you are about to migrate, but a serious background niggle and need to be wary if you're not.
Thanks for the warning.  Just off to put it on the 'Not approved' list for onward distribution.
Did your copy come via the WSUS route Strat?

Re: Windows Update

No...via normal Microsoft Update.
Plus it won't un-install from Control Panel.

Re: Windows Update

there was an MS blog post a while back that there new strategy going forwards would be to roll out in place upgrades from older OS's to the latest one so that they only required to support a single product, and the blogger also mentioned that in order to do so the upgrade would be priced at around $25, this would be the licence migration cost for all legally held licences ......
the only strange thing was the post got removed a few hours after it was posted  but the exec didn't get sacked so there's probably some truth behind it ..... certainly it would make a lot of financial sense for MS to follow that strategy particularly if they plan on reorganising and expanding the w8 product line (with the newest update its certainly a lot more user friendly for desktops)

Re: Windows Update

They want to force a flop on us, then claim it was the most d/loaded / bought O/S, in a bid to cover their gluteus maximus(s)
