Re: Why does this bring back memories of when I was working as an engineer

Because there is a room full of "experts", none of whom know what they are talking about, except, maybe, for the engineer, and I'm not so sure about him!

Sadly I've had to sit in at too many such meetings Undecided    Fortunately I have an accurately tuned 'Carp' detector which nosed out a) Pompous Project Managers and b) meetings like this.
Strategic loo breaks also worked wonders. Grin

Excellent video.
Unfortunately I Have attended similar meetings some of these being with "management experts" who ended up telling you what you already know.
The not so funny side was the sums of money they were paid for doing this and don't mention expenses  they always used first class travel and the best hotel in the area.

Cool Enter is exclusive world of the Meetings Engineer - Got a problem? Hold a meeting.
The world of IT is even worse IMHO - It's stuffed with Jargon Junkies, spouting terms, TLA's and paradigms, most of which are the bleeding obvious made obscure. Writing a computer program is now a 'design pattern'. Oh, and then there's Powerpoint.... Nice presentation, shame the content was cut-n-pasted from Wikipedia.

Brings back many memories of client meetings with Project "directors."

@AA in my young day you studied to be an Engineer and learnt to be a manager "on the job" now they study "Project Management" and learn the technology "on the job" or the buzzwords  Crazy
I've been a Project Director but hoped I was better than your comment

I have also attended many meetings like that as a mechanical, hardware and software engineer in the past.
Generally I get round most issues but that video rings true on so many levels when it comes to the reality of "it can't be done like that".
One of my earliest memories of engineering was when my boss asked me to shave a "thou" off something we were working on. I asked exactly what measurement that was and was told it was a little thicker than a gnats arse !

You see to most project managers these day a thou is a thousand pounds.

Re: Why does this bring back memories of when I was working as an engineer

I've recently experienced the "Agile" methodology. It was a bit like the older methodologies, but people used it as an excuse to use buzzwords to lie about their project progress. I used the "I am a simple man, but ..." technique to expose their lies.

Great video. So true!! I used to have a managing director similar to the guy chairing the meeting. If ever anyone started to criticise anything he would simply say, 'Don't bring me any problems'. When things went wrong he was always surprised Smiley

I sat in on a couple of similar meetings but managed to find urgent reasons for skipping subsequent ones.
