Why does the use of "My bad" irritate me

Definition http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=my%20bad
Quote

(n.) A combination of an apology and a dismissal. Basically, saying "oh yeah, I did that, but I don't care".
Persons of an older generation can find this quite annoying to hear when expecting an actual apology.
The other meanings given are quite revealing

True - alternatively
Quote
A grammatically incorrect way of acknowledging (facetiously) a wrongdoing.
Used very commonly by gangsta-wannabes and other sorts of conforming posers, the terrible grammar tends to drive literate people up the wall in absolute irritation.

Re: Why does the use of "My bad" irritate me

I never took it that way. I always simply thought of it as saying 'oops, sorry about that'.
I understand your irritation, though. It's like many of the phrases used on the internet. I detest them myself, but then a lot of them come from a certain area of the internet (in the last few years, anyway) and that's why I hate them. That said, it's like any language fad, each generation has their own phrases that as youths we think are cool and clever, and such like, and the older generations hate them. I remember my grandmother going up the wall because my generation said 'wicked' for 'really good'. In a similar vein, I go up the wall when some young nob says something is 'sick' for the same thing.

Our dentist often uses the word "cool" when commenting on something, all I need now is for the GP to start using the same terminology then I really will feel old. Smiley
