Re: Why do you post ?

When did we first start using apostrophes ?
The written word is constantly changing so providing you understand what someone is saying does it really matter ? Wink

Re: Why do you post ?

Interesting.
So it would be reasonable to say that people were still clearly understood before the introduction of the apostrophe.

Sometimes I wonder why I do it outside of moderation duties.

Oh, admit it Strat, you love it here really.
Some people start new topics a lot more than others, I tend to reply rather than starting topics (maybe I lack imagination?).
Posting here can sometimes be helpful to others, sometimes entertaining, occasionally controversial but always a lot more interesting and worthwhile than watching some of the drivel that passes for entertainment on the TV these days (IMHO).

Re: Why do you post ?

I've been posting on a variety of forums for years, sometimes good, sometimes the Mods don't like me and I get banned, like Sheffield Forum.

Re: Why do you post ?

Depends really on which area of the forum you post to. Most ask questions, but some just chat about anything in this area. Guess we are a social lot who like to chat about whatever we want to (within the forum rules).

In case you missed it I have made the occasional post where I subsequently prayed for the earth to swallow me whole....e.g.

Lightning fast critical posts subsequently made retraction pointless.

Re: Why do you post ?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), ‘apostrophe’ comes ultimately from Greek
ἡ ἀπόστροφος [προσῳδία] (hē apóstrophos [prosōidía], “[the accent of] ‘turning away’, or elision”), through Latin and French.
I think that makes apostrophes quite old.
