White House Down!

I wonder how many people remember  Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post back in the early 70s when some very good investigative reporting brought Richard Nixon down over Watergate.
The Washington Post has produced another scoop this week from their reporter Carol D. Leonnig.
An intruder entered the White House grounds but according to security services was apprehended in the early stages of his entry. Leonnig has discovered that this was not the case and the intruder got into the White House and walked into the East Room before being detained in the Green Room. Security seemed non existent.
White House
Red faces all round but some excellent reporting once again from the Washington Post.

The fact that a reporter got the story show how bad security is.

Re: White House Down!

You're right. I saw the reporter interviewed last night and it appears numerous staff were OK to talk to her. Obviously they spoke off the record.
There was a suggestion there is more to come.

Re: White House Down!

given that the senator leading the committee hearing spoke openly about receiving many details directly from whistle-blowers the leaking of the story to the press probably had back room approval prior to the publication going to print, there's always stupid decisions made about security by people who have no business being allowed to make them, letting ushers dictate that security systems should be muted because they make noise is just ridiculous, the solution should of been to give them a set of ear plugs and told to use as required .......

Re: White House breached twice in three days.

she might be embittered but  it was her own actions and inactions that lead to the problems, which just proves what a lot of people have said since she was nominated -she might have the ability to talk the talk but she's too weak to walk the walk-  and its yet another example of appointing inappropriate people for the job for political reasons .....

Re: White House Down!

There`s more security at major supermarket entrances... BIG guys with BLACK uniforms on, and walkie talkies, inspecting everyone who comes in.... and jumping on anyone who triggers off the alarm on the way out !  Shocked

Re: White House Down!

in past years the secret service frisked everyone who was going to be in close proximity and locked the area down prior to his arrival nowadays it seems there has been a policy change and that no longer happens so the agency and the usa are not seen as big and brutish, a policy change implemented by the now resigned head which clearly shows her lack of understanding of the needs of protective security should outweigh any other concerns over nicety .....

Re: White House Down!

All good perimeter security consists of layers designed according to the potential threats. The Whitehouse fence is probably built to resist ram raids by explosive laden vehicles and to provide 100ft or so of standoff space in case of a car bomb. However those techniques will not deter a single intruder on foot.  There should at least be buried proximity sensing cables and vibration sensitive geophones.  These help prevent the fortress like appearance but can give early alert and position of an intruder to the security team.
Current US Govt policy probably is against electrified fences and razor wire around the Whitehouse.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: White House Down!

they have the intruder detection gear fitted but it was muted because the idiot in charge caved in to the demands of the ushers who were annoyed by the noise whenever it went off ........

Re: White House Down!

Ever looked at "security" perimiter fencing, and thought....... "Why do they put all those coils of expensive razor wire on top of the wire netting fence?"
(erm..... no-body thought about someone coming along with bolt croppers and making a doorway in the wire netting fence    ? ? ? ? ? )    Huh Huh

Re: White House Down!

in the past the bases had a razor wire layered up on the inside of the net fence but they were largely removed in the late 90's although the fence toping layer was left because of problems with health and safety in removing it..... makes a mockery of security when you remove half the protection measures and then cry every time someone walks into a "secure zone"
