Where's the Driver?

Driverless cars are to come to the UK in January next year.
Cities are being asked to host a trial.
Driverless Cars
Seems an interesting idea. I wonder how it will go?

Re: Where's the Driver?

Well, it may make a change from when SWMBO is in the passenger meaning there are two of us driving Cheesy
On a more serious note, if you are involved in a collision with a driver-less car who would you claim against? The non-driver sitting reading the paper, the person who wrote the program, the person who programmed in the journey, the manufacture?
I don't like the idea of driver-less cars anyway but I suppose that progress Undecided

Cool An early concept of the driverless vehicle slash minicab from the movie Total Recall.
I am sure you sci-fi buffs remember the Johnny Cab > http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/tag/total-recall/
As for what happened to Johnny Cab? Not good.

Will Smith wasn't overly impressed with them in I Robot.

Volvo I think it was, have said they are going take responsibility for collisions involving theirs.
The biggest problem I can see with driverless cars, is they're going to have to coexist on roads with 'dumb' cars and even dumber drivers for a long time to come.

Re: Where's the Driver?

The government is to make changes to the law to answer some of the issues that driverless cars will present.

Re: Where's the Driver?

One drawback with the current testing of "driver less cars" is they are programmed to be "over polite" with zero aggression, hence will not 'edge into slow moving oncoming traffic'.
Be interesting to see how they develop.

I predict an after-market 'finger' for urban driverless vehicles and a rechipping option for Friday night maniac minicabs.

I suggest a self cleaning mini cab for obvious reason(s)

Re: Where's the Driver?

Presumably there will be a host of new laws.... such as

Causing death by dangerous driverless car.....
Exceeding the driverless speed limit
Failing to name the "driverless" driver.....
ETC...
WTF

The first thing they need to look at is testing them on our roads.  The 300K miles the Google car has done has all been in the US where roads are a lot straighter and wider and traffic is significantly slower than here in Europe.
