Where do you start………….

To rationalise the American gun laws. Transpires the company that manufactured the assault rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School is partially owned by a teachers retirement fund.

Re: Where do you start………….

Regardless of what the President said at the school the other day..... (something about making it so that this doesn`t happen again )... It will....
If he decided to "bite thebullet".... and say... "okay you guys.... no more "right to bear arms"... and we will be in a safer place"... those guys who already have them (legal or illegal) will do their utmost to hang on to them... and there will be a massive "underground market" because of all the guns in the U.S.  How on earth would you bring in all those guns, and shut down the gun factories, gun shops and affilliated businesses.... It is a massive problem... not as easy as saying it won`t happen again....

Re: Where do you start………….

There's powerful historic reasons why the USA population would want  to continue the right to bear arms so individuals can defend themselves. However there is an even stronger reason for better control of those arms to stop nutters from shooting school kids.

  • Firstly all such bearers of guns should be licensed  on an annual basis and pay for an annual safety training and character assessment;

  • All guns and ammunition must be kept in a locked approved gun safe;

  • Transport of the weapons from the home/property should be by approval permit only, with un-permitted transport leading to suspension of licence;

  • Semi-automatic weapons should only be used on rifle ranges by bona-fide clubs member and kept under supervised storage where no single person can obtain release;

Outright bans are draconian and punish the liberty of individuals who would do no harm to other people except in self defence.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Where do you start………….

And what you are suggesting is reasonable, to "reasonable" people.....
it will not stop the nutters from gaining access and carrying out their "missions"....
Unfortunately, no law(s) can prevent what has happened.... it will happen again, when some "un" reasonable nutter feels the urge to go out and kill people.
Check out the UK gun-law(s) and remember Dunblane........

Re: Where do you start………….

I'm fed up with the number of times that old phrase "make sure it never happens again" is spoken after any kind of tragic incident.
Inevitably little or nothing will change and the incident will occur again.
As far as the US and guns are concerned nothing will change there as the tradition is too entrenched and as shutter says the process of withdrawal of the right to bear arms would be too involved.

Re: Where do you start………….

The argument I hear from the right wing US blogs is - If there had been a man with a gun he would have been killed before he could carry out the massacre - whether that is entirely accurate or not it is how they think

Re: Where do you start………….

I remember seeing a statement by actor Charlton Heston at a (filmed) pro-gun rally, that he would only give up his guns if they were ripped from his cold dead hands. To which he was roundly lauded and cheered.
here is the short version:

Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Where do you start………….

But they could stop the sale of automatic or semi-automatic weapons !
Of course this will not stop people getting shot but it might reduce the numbers, even if it saves one life that would be a good enough reason to do it.

Question   Self defence against whom?
Answer  Another bampot who feels he/she isn't a complete person unless they have a gun to hand, and the bigger the better.
I read in the paper yesterday about one such who reckons that the answer to school massacres is to supply each head teacher with a machine gun!!  American schoolchildren would then have the option of being gunned down by either an outside or inhouse  gunner.
Needless to say he was the spokesman for the NRA in Texas

Re: Where do you start………….

I read that there are around 300 million guns in circulation in the US. It is not a problem that will be solved by new laws.

Re: Where do you start………….

The solution has to come from the American people. Politicians would be useless. Swmbo suggested a USA national 'boycott' of any organisation that actively support the second amendment by selling Arms.
Typical example would be, Walmart ................Who own Asda

Re: Where do you start………….

I have a lot of American friends and whilst they are all upset by the tragedy they do not want to give up their right to have firearms.

Re: Where do you start………….

at the time the second amendment to the constitution was adopted, 1791, 'arms' were pistols, muskets and cannons.  muskets take a while to load, aim and fire.  were the usa to revert to those as a definition the arms people may bear, it would slow things down a mite.

Re: Where do you start………….

@ artificer.... agree... the definition of "arms" , or at least, a definitive description of what type off "arms" can be carried, iaw the constitution would be an improvement .....

I can`t see many of the so called "nutters" toting a cannon to do a "dirty deed"....
