Where do folk buy their laptop/desktop/tablet from?

In the past I have always purchased laptops & desktops from the makers, ie,  in my case - HP.

For the folk who do not build their own, where do you purchase - supermarkets like John Lewis/Tesco or elsewhere?

Is there any advantage purchasing from a supermarket as opposed to a manufacturer?

All my laptops for the past 15 or more years have come direct from DELL online... delivered within 24 to 48 hours ( depending on weekend )..  and never had a problem with any of them.. so never sent one back..

My laptops have all come via ebay, either as spares/repairs, or as working but missing HDD, PSU, RAM, whatever, far cheaper... Smiley

The two Laptops I have are getting very long in the tooth so I guess I'll have to break the habit of a lifetime and actually buy one.

Currys often seem to have good deals.

I got mine given as a spare or repair, all it wanted was a battery and a charger. Freecycle eh?..what a nice web-site. Thumbs Up

Buy all electrical goods from John lewis as they have a 2 year warranty on all electrical goods and 99% of the time stuff goes direct to your local waitrose store next day for you to collect at your leisure

Re: Where do folk buy their laptop/desktop/tablet from?

Anywhere that has what i want at a price that i'm happy with.

Big rig i got from ebay. The small one from asda. Previous computers from freecycle, netbook from toshiba, phone from aldi... parts from various freecyclers (eg pci cards / hard drives / etc).

I don't really have any single preferred source.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Mine came from Tescos - bought with a load of double up vouchers leaving only about £30 more to pay!

Re: Where do folk buy their laptop/desktop/tablet from?

Previously built my own and recently bought things like motherboard and cpu from Amazon because of the excellent returns policy.

Always buy memory from Crucial UK - support and returns are excellent

However the next one I buy - for my better half - will be different because a reasonably modern CPU will do everything she needs without a separate graphics card and given the specs now available (hard drive size and memory will probably not need to be upgraded so a laptop with ports for external keyboard, monitor and mouse may be the way to go if they are still available for a reasonable price otherwise a compact desktop)

Re: Where do folk buy their laptop/desktop/tablet from?

From the above replies it seems that everybody is satisfied with their computers from a various range of suppliers.

Perhaps computers are far more reliable in respect of hardware than they were years ago, certainly the cost has come down when balanced against what you get for your money.

My Desktop came from one of those internet firms that gives you a tick list of the hardware you want along with the option of a OS. That saved me a few pounds.

Tablet came from John Lewis, not the cheapest but reassuring having a guarantee thrown in for free.

Replacing items in a desktop might not be a problem but no idea where I would start on a tablet or laptop.
