Mr Alexander said a further 12 projects with a value of £8.5bn approved since January would be suspended or referred for consideration by the spending review process over the coming months.
They included the health research support service, the Kent Thameside strategic transport programme and the libraries' modernisation programme.
"Any other new major hospital schemes will be assessed in the context of the spending review to ensure they are affordable and represent the highest possible value for money," said Mr Alexander.
He said the government had acted to confirm approval of a number of projects including funding for essential medicines in case of a flu pandemic, some hospital projects, support for post offices and spending on "crucial military equipment" in Afghanistan.
Sheffield Forgemasters was told in March it would receive the loan to build a world-leading 15,000 tonne press to supply specialist components for the nuclear industry.
The loan aimed to create up to 180 jobs in the city and help the firm to bid for contracts on the next generation of nuclear power stations

It has been suggested in some quarters that the cancellation of the Sheffield Forgemaster scheme will materially improve the position of certain South Korean companies thus exporting jobs directly from the UK to South Korea and that some of those involved in the decision to renege on the loan (note, this was a loan not a grant at full market interest rates) have major share holdings in those South Korean companies via Trust Funds set up offshore to hold such investments tax free.

more on the A14

Tonight on Look East - the cuts kick in. This afternoon, the bombshell announcement that plans for major improvements to the A14 in Cambridgeshire have been suspended as part of government plans to save money. The The 1.1 billion scheme would have seen the road widened to six lanes between Cambridge and Huntingdon. It's a major blow for drivers and businesses - it's one of the most congested stretches of road in the country. Alex Dunlop will have the details while Richard Bond will look at the implications of this decision for the regional economy. Why should Forgemasters get special favours (Couldn't spell preferentail treatment), what is so special about them?
There are many other businesses that could do with a leg up too.
Get ready for it, the Chuckle brothers are just getting started.
As I understand it here in the NW there has to be £3 Billion savings over the next three years .....in the NHS!
Its [Censored] not very good now so how it will be in three years is anybody's guess.
And I could not give a toss about the A14 being widened, they should be fixing all the bloody pothole elsewhere first

Re: Where Artmo - telling us how good they are doing

The reason the Forgemasters contract is so special is it ties in with so many of the current requirements regarding our national and international responsibilities, we will either have to pay extra carbon taxation, commit millions to renogotiating treaties or import, at vast expense, the finished products that the kind of applications that they were intending to work on aren't  produced here.
It's a direct attack, not only on British manufacturing (an aspect of business that the Tories have been determined to break ever since MacMillan) but also on a Labour voting part of the country.
If the loan was to go ahead it would give us more than a toehold in the future of low carbon energy engineering and improve the skill sets of British industry at a time when we cannot hope to compete with low foreign wages in general manufacturing but must stay at the very edge of advances in the engineering sector in order to maintain any kind of competitiveness in an industry where so much depends for future employment, profit and stature.

I note that the Tories are still committed to CrossRail, a transport initiative that can, at best, improve the traffic situation in London by 5% but will provide good access from places like Hampstead down to Westminster and the City but have cancelled such schemes as the Leeds Tramway which has been predicted at improving transport in that City by over 85% at a cost of well less than 1% of CrossRail.

Re: Where Artmo - telling us how good they are doing

So, we have a budget that seems to pour money into the already wealthy's pockets through major reductions in business costs with no encouragement for expansion or increased employment, tax reductions for the lower paid that will be more than eaten up by increased costs or reduction in services, no help whatsoever for the seriously poor coupled with increases in prices and reduction in benefit value and the sop of no immediate increase in excise duties (but wait 'til the reviews in the Autumn).
The whole thing is a major shift of wealth from the poor to the already comfortably off and even more to the seriously wealthy.  There's major encouragement to move jobs offshore, the freezing of Council Tax means, due to the increase in pension liabilities, a major cut in services that will, once again, hit the poor rather than the wealthy and the cuts demanded of Government departments means a major increase in unemployment with the concomittant reduction in general wages thus improving the bonuses of the company shareholders and directors.
The reduction in investment coupled with the reduction in general wages and the increase in taxation (through the VAT increase) will result in lowers sales and an entrenchment of those with savings exactly as has been seen in Japan with an equal slide back into recession, the money markets are happy because labour costs have been reduced and government support of the 'unwaged' slashed so dividends will be higher thus enabling the move of money from relatively low return Western economies to high risk and high return third world investments that will do little to improve the lot of those third world countries that have resources to exploit and 'governments' to bribe.

Should be interesting in Braintree South Ward tomorrow the 24th, a local by election after the previous Con Councillor was booted out for failing to attend for a long time
