You could try not letting it run low on credit all the time.

Re: When does your Prepay electric key meter beep to warn you are running low ??

That is easier said than done, when it is mostly in SWMBO's purse
Also that would be defeating the object
As the meter is not working as it should
& as we all know
When one problem starts, others typically follow, especially if not repaired / replaced
Also not forgetting that it shares a cupboard with the gas supply / meter
I would rather not take any chances, no matter how likely / unlikely an explosion might / might not be
No offence but its not your lives that is put @ a potential risk
Anything happens to SWMBO & the kids, then I will be making a personal trip up to their headquarters
My housing literally felt my wrath when the blew the new fuse box they installed a few days previous, by drilling into a Pyro cable
Lives are far too precious to be fobbed off by these big firms, that do not care

Re: When does your Prepay electric key meter beep to warn you are running low ??

I finally managed to get through to an advisor, he refuses to take it on board that the meter has gone faulty, & he will not send anyone out,
After several minutes arguing with him & stating that I had the same happen with a previous meter, he said that, it should only beep when it gets to £0.50p, I had to remind him what his coleagues has said previously & what it also states on their website [quote= http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/support-centre/payments/prepayment/]If your credit is running low
When your credit drops to £1, your meter will bleep and you will see the letter ‘E’ flashing on the display. You should top up your key as soon as possible.
& he was still adamant that he was right & the website was giving wrong information
I also quoted to him what the Guranteed Standard mention on the C.A.B's Website
[quote= http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/wales/consumer_w/consumer_energy_supply_e/consumer_energy_bills_e/consumer_paying_your_energy_bills_e/prepayment_meters_paying_for_energy/your_prepayment_meter_is_faulty.htm]Electricity meters
If you report a problem with an electricity meter between 7am and 7pm on a working day, the supplier must send someone to repair or replace the meter within three hours of you reporting it.
At other times, the supplier must send someone within four hours.
If they don't and the meter turns out to be faulty, the supplier should pay you £22 compensation. This is called a guaranteed standard.
& he also tried refuting them saying that they were misinformed
When I asked him if he was prepared to go to his companies webmaster & the C.A.B to let them know that they have wrong information displaying, he put the phone down on me
Courtesy of the C.A.B, I have a new email to address issues to customerservicedirector@scottishpower.co.uk
To which I have already had a reply

Re: When does your Prepay electric key meter beep to warn you are running low ??

Just had a phonecall from Ann @ Scottish Power
She has listened to the call I made yesterday & is going to make sure she feedbacks the information to the guys line manager to make sure that he does not give false information in the future, as he was clearly out of order, by giving false information,
She said as I have now got supply of electric, let the meter run low & see if if beeps next time we let it run low, if not, phone up ask for her & she will arrange an engineer within the 3 hour slot as it is supposed to be, since I was initially refused on both occasions of the faulty meters, (hence the compensation of £40 cheque in the interim then £22 credit on the key after the meter was checked
To clarify: The correct information is as stated above
1. The meter should beep as soon as it reaches £1 (If it does not, then it is deemed faulty)
2. Upon report of a faulty meter, they must send an engineer to repair / replace the meter within (3 hours Weekdays (4 hours Weekends))
She also said, after she has spoken to her manager, she will call back tomorrow to arrange compensation for being completely mis - informed by her colleague & for him not arranging an engineer within the Guaranteed Standard timeslots

Never come across one of these meters - do they bleep once or continuously when they are low?

............and you're sure the meter you have works the same way Undecided
Why not have an ordinary credit meter fitted or a prepay one if you don't want to use a prepay one. I am guessing but they possibly are cheaper than your present arrangement.

Re: When does your Prepay electric key meter beep to warn you are running low ??

the beauty of key meters is they all work the same way, from a landlords POV there perfect because tenants cant accrue debt and do a runner, from tenants POV (those that move fairly often) there brilliant because your not moving into a place where nobody will give you an account until the existing one is paid off....
most landlords insist on key meters so people cant generate debts whilst occupying the property, mine through a track when they realised the builders hadn't swapped the house over to having key meters before I moved in (all the other houses had there's changed over before they moved in) me I got lucky and am in the privileged position of being able to pay my bills by direct debit Smiley
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you

Here's a completely random manual for a pre-payment meter.  In this particular example the audible warning is an option that can be enabled/disabled by a programmer unit so perhaps yours is similar and it just needs to be turned on?

If the tenancy agreement states that the tenant is responsible for utility bills then the landlord would not be responsible for any debt accrued up until the tenants did a runner. So I can't see it makes any difference as to which meter is installed. Obviously the first thing the landlord should do is inform the utility companies giving them the correct readings.
I have had three landlords in three properties; one was a new-build with a credit meter already installed, another was a key meter and the landlord who agreed to let me change it to a credit meter and the third already had a credit meter. I also had no problem with my current landlady in changing supplier.

That is for a completely different make / model as the one in the link is for a "Single Phase Magnetic Card Electricity Meter"
For clarification
It is an "ACE 900 KBD"

Still believe that the audible warning would be programmable as meters can be fitted in communal areas of flats or in same cases in another household so other residents would not be too happy with an annoying warning.
The particular meter you have, which is the most common prepayment meter, is manufactured only a few miles from where I live.

Re: When does your Prepay electric key meter beep to warn you are running low ??

As many meters are fitted outside, I would have thought that a 20 minute warning beep would result in many complaints from neighbours.
Certainly if I had a neighbour who woke me up on a regular basis with their meter beeping and running out then I'd have words (or a visit with a tin of expanding foam .....)
When we were on a prepay meter many many years ago, the warnings given were less than a minute - if you were out you'd miss it but we kept ours topped up anyway.
