What would you have done in this situation?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-32173459
Ridiculous story.
Personally, I would have made the individual work at the store to pay off the costs.

Re: What would you have done in this situation?

Sounds like just a bit of a dust-up which might have been dealt with differently.  Roll eyes
But as we have seen elsewhere, people cannot be allowed to get away with just having a bad day, sounding off a bit and throwing something at people.  If formal heavy-handedness is right for people in the public eye, then it is equally right for all.
If it can be argued that principles over behaviour are at stake in one area, than it has to be seen to apply to all areas.  At least this guy had the chance to attempt to defend himself in a court of justice, rather than a BBC kangaroo court.

He should have been transported to Australia.

How long did it take to come to court? 2p seems a modest amount of interest. What about the cleaning materials and staff time required to mop up the spillage etc.? He got off lightly.
It wasn't stated why he was asked to return the milk to the shelf and leave the store in the first place.

The court decision seems fair all round.

Re: What would you have done in this situation?

I also think it fair when you add in the fine and court costs, providing the £10 is deducted at source from his benefits.
One problem is that a small shopkeeper faced with the same situation might be reluctant to go to court as the cost in both time and money would not be worth it.
Whoever phased out the use of stocks has a lot to answer for.

@gleneagles, you make a good point about small shopkeepers. They would possibly not have pursued the matter at all.

Re: What would you have done in this situation?

he should of been dragged out of the shop by the cops and flogged in the car park before being shoved into the stocks from duck till dawn win a big sign next to him highlighting his crime, as should anyone else who does such stuff, there is never any call for being a thug and the quicker people have that beaten out of them the quicker we can all be living in a nice polite society, of course if the individual is foreign then just shove them into the bomb bay of a b-52 for return travel and Ariel delivery to their country of origin (its their own fault if they don't have a parachute they should of thought of that before they broke the law)
the bible teaches us that we meet force we should return it with overarching force and beat back the aggressor until they learn their lesson and its something sorely missing from society for the last 30 years !

Maybe the manager more than deserved it.
I've been in a position arguing with an Asda "manager" where throwing a bucket of milk was very tempting.
To say he was intransigent would have been an understatement. He was wrong but refused to accept it.
The looks on the faces of the staff flanking him all but verbally agreed with me.
At that point I just smiled, wished him all the best in his future career, and left.
