What sound/noise should electric cars have?

Should electric cars be made to go 'vroom'?
Quote
With whisper-quiet electric cars set to proliferate, the motor industry is under pressure to give them an artificial noise for safety purposes, but should they sound like traditional petrol vehicles?

Quote
How loud they should these vehicles be? Do they need to make a noise when they are stopped at the traffic lights? How would hundreds of unmatched vehicle noises sound altogether on our streets?

Quote
There are certain noises that people associate with transport and they alert us that a vehicle is heading in our direction.

Come on, give your best (and worst) ideas for what sounds should eminate from these new electric and hydrogen powered cars.
How about the sound of a horse walking for when slow moving, then trotting for a little faster, then cantor and, finally, a gallop? When stationary at lights it could be made to 'neigh' and instead of a horn it could be made to squeal Cheesy Cool

Re: What sound/noise sould electric cars have?

They should make a "humming sound" when stationary
The sound should change to a low pitched buzz and rise in volume and pitch as the speed increases... Grin
Hopefully, this will deter "boy racers"    (  Roll eyes  ) from revving their engines at the lights and the high pitched screaming noise at 70 mph will be so intolerable that people will start to drive at a more "comfortable" speed.  ! ! ! ..  Grin

If it was user customisable then you can imagine the boy racers downloading Ferrari sounds for installation in their Golfs Roll eyes

Actually , that is an interesting idea, Strat......  My personal choice would be the sound of a steam locomotive, from leaving the station and graduating to the full express  !  Cheesy

Re: What sound/noise sould electric cars have?

The 'ribbit' sound of a frog, gather in crescendo as the car goes faster
The size of the vehicle depends on the species of frog
Bull frogs
for large vehicles
To green tree frogs for 2 – 3 wheelers

edit:-  Was going to suggest some species of bird call...........................but that has the makings of another 'duck' thread

They should sound like an X-wing or a Tie fighter in flight.
And the noise of the horn should be replaced with the pew-pew of the laser's the afore mentioned ships fire.

Re: What sound/noise should electric cars have?

We shold not be subjected to the noise of electric cars.  Until UK electricity generation moves significantly away from the current high reliance on fossil fuels electric cars will NOT be environmentally sound.  The only 'advantage' of electric vehicles is a reduction in LOCAL inner-city pollution.  There are too many 'green technologies' that have hidden underlying flaws - don't get me started on heat-pumps please.
