What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

As I write software on a daily basis I, like many, have a favourite editor and for me it’s Vim I simply can’t see past it. I have tried various different editors and IDEs in the past but I always end up returning to Vim due to it's power and ability to be customised.

I mean what's not to like!

I must have been really bad in a previous life as this was my 3rd ISP in a row that used lithium.

Nothing wrong with Notepad @Browni, but depending on your use you could maybe look at Notepad++ (Windows)

@Mook

I can see you're using a Mac from your screenshot Tongue

I used to use vi on UNIX which takes a bit of getting used to. Once you do it is quite good. Learning the shortcuts, etc.

Not tried it on here (I use a Mac too), but here is a Mac variant.

EDIT: Sorry I see you're already using it.

Re: What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

I use the vanilla Vim @Alex as I can use it either on my Mac, Linux or Windows (via SSH) without any version issues getting in the way, I just find it easier. As you say once you’ve learned the keyboard its easy, after all Vim is Vi improved!

I can even edit a remote source file locally using

:e scp://mook@host//path/filename.cpp

then build on the remote machine using a shell script that captures the build output in Vim.

Re: What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

I only suggested that you might want to consider looking at a variation of your current editor depending on how you used it. I was only trying to be helpful, as I have it installed myself on a Windows PC.

Thanks @Mook but I have been converting caffeine to code since the '80s.

Perhaps I should have added a smiley to my reply Grin

Oh! Caffeine to code, so you're a CoffeeScript developer @Browni. Wink

Re: What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

Notepad++ is my preferred method of coding scripts like php, it's immensely powerful. I couldn't use a command line editor like vim, it would drive me nuts.

For assembled programs the proper ide is the only way to go.

Re: What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

Yep you’re right @7up.

I think I have used it, the nice thing is it’ll pickup the language you are using from the file extension, but there is an option to change it. Say if you opened code from a .txt file, it wouldn’t know.

Change it to what it is and it’ll highlight keywords from that language to make it easier to read.

Re: What’s your favourite Editor or IDE?

The thing with NP++ is that it has so many useful features that i never found in vi or vim (yes i did try them years ago). Just simple things such as removing trailing spaces from each line, setting tabs to spaces (and allowing you to specify how many spaces) and other things like the encoding. Plus it can be used as a portable app requiring no registry dust to be left behind.
