What is the 'data' booth for in main post offices?

I noticed yesterday when entering in to buy a stamp and in front of the main counter is a curtained off area about phone booth size with a metal base plate and something above it which stated 'data ......' Is it where the post office staff have their tea? A sort of Tardis?

It has an integral photo machine, so you can obtain a passport, renew your driving licence photo etc and deal with the paperwork all at the counter.
Around these parts, the counter is also used for other transactions - possibly they're reserved for the specialist ones in larger post offices.
